Chapter 13 - The Mistake Richard Could Never Undo

The plan was simple.
Richard would sign.
Adrian would release Maya.
Everyone would leave.
But Richard had learned something important.
People who believed they controlled everything always made one mistake.
They underestimated desperation.
While Adrian prepared the documents, Richard watched the room.
The exits.
The guards.
The cameras.
Everything.
Victoria stood near the wall.
Broken.
Silent.
Richard looked at her.
She understood.
A small movement.
A warning.
She looked toward the hallway.
Then back at him.
Maya was upstairs.
Richard signed the first page.
Adrian smiled.
“That was easier than expected.”
Richard looked at him.
“You never knew Eleanor.”
Adrian stopped.
“What?”
“You thought she was weak because she hid things.”
Richard continued writing.
“But she was protecting people.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Careful.”
Richard looked up.
“She knew you would do this.”
The smile disappeared.
“What did you say?”
Richard reached into his pocket.
Not for a weapon.
For a small recorder.
Eleanor’s recorder.
The one he found in her closet.
Adrian’s face changed.
Richard pressed play.
Eleanor’s voice filled the warehouse.
“If Adrian is listening to this, it means I was right.”
Adrian froze.
The recording continued.
“He will try to use my family against each other.”
A pause.
“But Richard needs to know something.”
Richard stopped breathing.
Eleanor’s voice softened.
“I never stopped trusting you.”
Adrian looked furious.
“No.”
He moved forward.
But Victoria stepped between them.
“Dad.”
Everyone froze.
Adrian stared at his daughter.
“You’re choosing him?”
Victoria shook her head.
“No.”
She looked toward the stairs.
“I’m choosing Maya.”
Adrian’s anger exploded.
“You ungrateful—”
He stopped.
Because Victoria was crying.
Not fake tears.
Real ones.
“I spent years trying to be the person you wanted me to be.”
She whispered.
“And I became someone I hate.”
A sound came from upstairs.
A door opening.
Maya appeared.
She was holding a stuffed rabbit.
Richard moved instantly.
“Maya!”
She ran.
But Adrian reached for her.
Richard lunged.
The room exploded into movement.
A guard shouted.
Victoria screamed.
The lights went out.
When emergency lights came on…
Maya was gone.
Again.
Richard looked around.
“No.”
Not again.
Not his daughter.
Not another person disappearing.
Then he saw something.
The stuffed rabbit.
On the floor.
With a small note attached.
Three words.
SHE IS SAFE.
Richard looked at Victoria.
She shook her head.
“I didn’t write that.”
And then everyone heard it.
A child’s voice.
From the security speaker.
“Daddy?”
Richard turned.
“Maya?”
Her voice trembled.
“I’m sorry.”
Richard ran toward the control room.
May you like
Because his daughter was not with Adrian.
Someone else had taken her.
