Chapter 11 - The Man Behind The Curtain

Richard had faced angry investors.
He had faced lawsuits.
He had faced men twice his size who believed fear was a weapon.
But nothing had ever made his hands shake like the video of his daughter sitting on a cold floor.
Maya.
His little girl.
The child who used to fall asleep holding his fingers.
The child who still called strawberries “red apples.”
The child who ran to him because she believed he could fix anything.
And now she was somewhere he could not reach.
Because he had trusted the wrong people.
Richard sat alone in his car outside the abandoned warehouse.
The rain hit the windshield.
He stared at the building.
No guards.
No lights.
No movement.
Exactly the kind of place someone chose when they wanted control.
His phone buzzed.
A message.
COME INSIDE. ALONE.
Richard looked at the weapon hidden beneath his jacket.
Then he removed it.
Not because he trusted Adrian.
Because Maya needed him thinking clearly.
Inside the warehouse, the air smelled like dust and old metal.
“Richard.”
The voice came from the darkness.
Adrian Vance stepped forward.
Older than Richard remembered.
Thinner.
But the same cold confidence remained.
“You look surprised.”
Richard stared.
“You’re supposed to be dead.”
Adrian smiled.
“That’s what people say when they stop looking.”
“Where is my daughter?”
“Safe.”
Richard’s expression hardened.
“You put a child in danger and call that safe?”
Adrian laughed quietly.
“Interesting coming from you.”
Richard stepped forward.
“You’re blaming me?”
“I’m reminding you.”
Adrian walked closer.
“You built a perfect life after destroying mine.”
Richard shook his head.
“You lost your company because of your own choices.”
Adrian’s smile disappeared.
“You still believe that.”
A door opened behind them.
Victoria walked in.
Richard’s chest tightened.
She looked different.
No makeup.
No perfect dress.
No carefully controlled expression.
Just exhaustion.
“Maya?”
Victoria looked away.
Richard saw it.
The guilt.
Finally.
“You knew.”
Victoria’s eyes filled.
“I didn’t know it would go this far.”
Richard stared.
“You brought my daughter to him.”
“I was trying to fix things.”
“Fix things?”
His voice broke.
“You terrified a two-year-old girl.”
Victoria looked down.
For the first time, she had no answer.
Adrian interrupted.
“Enough.”
He looked at Richard.
“You want your daughter?”
Richard nodded.
“Then listen.”
Adrian placed a folder on the table.
Inside were old documents.
Photographs.
Medical reports.
Richard flipped through them.
Then he stopped.
Because one document had Eleanor’s signature.
A document dated two months before her death.
“What is this?”
Adrian smiled.
“The truth.”
Richard read the first line.
