Chapter 18 - The Last Shadow of Edmund|

Edmund's escape triggered an immediate security crisis.

The guards assigned to his holding facility were found unconscious, and the ancient restraints had been broken from the inside. No one knew whether he had received help or whether his remaining power had been underestimated.

Adrian ordered the royal residence secured, but Hazel insisted that the investigation remain focused on evidence rather than fear.

“He wants us to believe he's unstoppable,” she said. “That's how he controlled people for decades.”

Rowan agreed.

“Edmund always preferred a frightened enemy to a strong one.”

The investigators traced the escape to a network of former royal officers who had remained loyal to the old regime. Their communications pointed toward the abandoned fortress where Edmund had once conducted his experiments.

Hazel recognized the location from her mother's records.

“That's where he kept the original bloodline archive.”

Adrian looked at the map.

“Then he may be going back for it.”

They assembled a small team: Adrian, Hazel, Rowan, Commander Ward, and Eleanor. The plan was to secure the archive and prevent Edmund from using it to reverse the changes to the royal bond.

Hazel refused to remain behind.

“This is about my family and the people he tried to control. I won't be protected by being excluded.”

Adrian met her gaze.

“Then we go together. But we agree on one thing: no one acts alone.”

The fortress stood on a cliff above a frozen river. Its stone walls had weathered decades of storms, and its lower chambers remained sealed behind iron doors.

Inside, they found the archive intact.

Shelves held medical records, ritual instructions, and lists of wolves who had been subjected to Edmund's experiments. Hazel discovered a file containing her mother's final report.

Lydia had written that the royal bond could be changed without destroying the kingdom, but Edmund refused to accept a system in which people could freely reject his authority.

At the bottom of the report, she had added one final warning.

The bond will collapse if the Moonveil heir is forced to serve as its anchor. The only safe path is voluntary consent, freely given and freely withdrawn.

Hazel showed the page to Adrian.

“He was planning to use me to rebuild the bond.”

Adrian's face hardened.

“He would have turned your blood into a permanent instrument of control.”

A sound came from the upper corridor.

Edmund appeared on the stairs, holding an ancient silver blade.

“You always were your mother's daughter,” he said.

Hazel stepped forward.

“You killed her because she refused to help you.”

“She refused to understand the cost of leadership.”

“No. She understood the cost. She refused to make other people pay it for you.”

Edmund raised the blade.

Adrian moved between them, but Hazel touched his arm.

“Let me speak.”

Edmund laughed.

“You think words will stop me?”

“No. But perhaps the truth will stop the people still willing to follow you.”

She turned toward the hidden guards watching from the shadows.

“Look at the records. Look at what he did to children, to healers, to entire bloodlines. Ask yourselves whether you are protecting the kingdom—or protecting a man who cannot bear to be refused.”

Several guards lowered their weapons.

Edmund's expression turned savage.

He lunged toward Hazel.

Adrian intercepted him, and the two men crashed against the stone railing. The blade fell, skidding across the floor.

Hazel reached the archive console and activated the emergency broadcast. The fortress's records began transmitting to the independent council and investigators.

Edmund saw the lights flash.

“No!”

He tore free of Adrian and rushed toward the console.

Hazel stood in his path.

“You don't get to erase us anymore.”

The former king raised his hand and issued his most powerful command.

“KNEEL!”

The force struck Hazel.

She felt her knees buckle.

Then she remembered her mother, Rowan, and every wolf who had been told that obedience was the price of belonging.

She remained standing.

Edmund's aura shattered around her.

The guards stepped away from him.

Adrian seized the fallen blade and kicked it out of reach. Commander Ward restrained Edmund while Eleanor secured the archive.

For the first time in twenty-four years, the former king stood without followers.

As the guards led him away, he looked at Hazel.

“You have destroyed the kingdom.”

May you like

Hazel shook her head.

“No. I have given it back to the people who live in it.”
