Chapter 16 - The Challenge of the Fallen Alpha|

The pack assembly took place in a vast hall outside Manhattan, where representatives from every major territory gathered beneath banners bearing their ancestral crests.

Adrian arrived with Hazel at his side. He had offered to make a public statement condemning Preston, but Hazel had insisted on speaking for herself.

Preston stood in the center of the hall.

He looked composed, though the tension in his shoulders betrayed him. Genevieve had provided evidence against her father, but Preston still believed that enough wolves feared the Moonveil bloodline to support him.

He raised his voice.

“Members of the assembly, the kingdom is in danger. Our Alpha King has placed himself under the influence of a woman whose power can undermine every pack's authority.”

Murmurs spread.

Preston continued.

“He claims to protect her, but no one knows whether his decisions are truly his own. We must determine whether Adrian Blackthorne remains fit to rule.”

Adrian did not interrupt.

Preston turned toward Hazel.

“Hazel Montgomery, do you deny that your presence has altered the king's behavior?”

Hazel stepped forward.

“No.”

The room stirred.

She continued.

“I have changed how he treats people. I have not controlled his mind. He can disagree with me, and I can disagree with him. That is the difference between a relationship and a command.”

Preston scoffed.

“Convenient words from someone who can resist every Alpha in this room.”

Hazel looked around the hall.

“Can you?”

Several wolves shifted uneasily.

“Can you trust a leader who needs everyone to obey him without question? Can you call a pack strong if its members are afraid to tell the truth?”

Preston's face darkened.

“This is not a philosophical debate. You possess a dangerous ability.”

“An ability you tried to silence before you understood it.”

The hall went quiet.

Hazel described the medical records, the suppression treatments, and the documents linking Dr. Voss to Richard Sinclair. Eleanor presented verified copies of Genevieve's evidence. Independent investigators confirmed the authenticity of the messages.

Preston tried to interrupt.

“These records could have been fabricated!”

Genevieve stood from the second row.

“They were not.”

Every head turned toward her.

She explained her father's role and admitted her own involvement. She did not excuse herself. She named the meetings she had attended, the information she had withheld, and the ways she had helped Preston frame Hazel as unstable.

Preston stared at her.

“You're destroying your own family.”

“No,” Genevieve said. “I'm refusing to help you destroy someone else's.”

The assembly erupted.

Preston raised his hand and released his Alpha aura. It rolled across the hall, forcing weaker wolves to their knees. He turned toward Hazel with a cruel smile.

“Kneel.”

Hazel felt the command strike her.

For a moment, the old fear returned—the memory of doctors telling her she was defective, of Preston deciding her place, of powerful people treating her refusal as a threat.

Then she remembered her mother's letter.

Your life does not belong to a crown, a pack, or a man who fears your freedom.

Hazel remained standing.

“I will not.”

Preston's aura intensified.

Adrian stepped forward, but Hazel lifted her hand.

“Let me.”

She faced Preston.

“You have mistaken fear for respect for so long that you no longer understand the difference.”

Her own aura emerged—not as a crushing force, but as a clear, steady presence. Wolves across the hall felt the pressure lift. Those who had been forced to kneel rose slowly.

Preston staggered.

The assembly watched as his command failed.

Elder representatives called for a formal vote. Preston was stripped of his authority pending investigation into assault, coercion, and conspiracy.

As guards approached, he looked at Hazel with naked hatred.

“You think you've won?”

“No,” she said. “I think you've finally been heard.”

He was escorted from the hall.

But before the doors closed, he shouted one last warning.

“The royal bond is already breaking! You have no idea what happens when the king loses control!”

Adrian turned sharply toward the council representatives.

“What does he mean?”

No one answered.

Then every royal crest in the hall began to glow.

And far beneath the capital, an ancient bell rang for the first time in a century.
