Chapter 9 - I BEGIN TO FIGHT BACK

I sat down at the kitchen table and made a list.
First: Adrian’s lawyer. I called him immediately. He confirmed that the envelope had been delivered safely. He confirmed that he would release copies to the courts and the press within twenty‑four hours if Adrian was not released. He also confirmed what I had already guessed—Julian had powerful friends, deep pockets, and a long reach.
“He will try to take the children through family court,” the lawyer warned me. “He will paint you as unstable. As an opportunist. He will do everything he can to get them away from you before our evidence can be heard.”
“Let him try,” I said. “I will not hand them over. Not without a fight.”
Second: The guards. I spoke privately to the head of security. I told him exactly who Julian was and exactly what he had done. I told him that if Julian arrived, he was to be turned away at the gate. If he forced entry… they were to defend this house with their lives.
The head guard looked at me long and quiet. Then he nodded once.
“We were hired by Mr. Harrington. We answer to him. And to you, until he returns. No one enters without your written permission. Not family. Not police. No one.”
Third: I called Julian back myself.
He answered on the second ring, sounding smug.
“Changed your mind already?” he asked.
“I have not,” I said. “Listen to me carefully. Adrian left full documentation with his lawyer. Every payment. Every instruction. Every letter Clara received. Everything. If Adrian is not released by tomorrow morning, every single piece of evidence goes public. Your name. Your crimes. Everything. The courts will see it. The press will print it. And your reputation—along with your claim to the family fortune—will be destroyed forever.”
Silence stretched on the other end of the line.
“You are bluffing,” Julian said, but his voice had lost some of its confidence.
“Am I?” I replied. “Clara told Adrian everything. Marcus confirmed it all. We have dates. Account numbers. Witnesses. You built this entire scheme on secrecy, Julian. Once the truth is out… what do you have left?”
He did not answer immediately. When he spoke, his voice had turned cold and dangerous.
“Release Adrian,” I said. “Drop all charges. And leave this country. Or I destroy you.”
“You are making a mistake, little girl,” Julian said softly. “You do not know who you are fighting. I have waited twenty years for this. I will not be stopped by a nanny with a few pieces of paper.”
“Then we shall see who falls first,” I replied.
I hung up before he could threaten me further.
I set the telephone down and realized my hands were trembling. But my mind was clear. For the first time since Vanessa locked those children away, I understood the full truth. Julian did not just want money. He wanted revenge against Adrian’s father. Against the will that had cut him out. Against the life he believed was stolen from him.
Adrian was the obstacle. Lily and Noah were the keys to the fortune. And I… I was just in the way.
But Julian had made one fatal mistake. He had assumed I was weak. He assumed that without Adrian standing beside me, I would fold. He did not understand that love makes people stronger than any amount of money or power ever could.
I walked upstairs to the playroom. Lily sat on the rug building a tower while Noah banged blocks beside her. They looked up when I entered. Lily’s face was serious.
“Is Daddy coming home today?” she asked.
I knelt beside her and smoothed her hair.
“He is having to work very hard right now,” I told her. “But he loves you more than anything. And he will come home. I promise.”
Lily studied my face. Then she nodded solemnly.
“We will be brave until then,” she said.
My throat tightened. I hugged her close.
“Yes. We will be very brave.”
I stood up and walked to the window. Somewhere out there, Julian was making plans. He would not back down easily. He would try to break me. To scare me. To take the children by force if necessary.

But he would find nothing but steel where he expected softness.
The war had begun. And I intended to win it.
