Chapter 17 - THE FINAL CONFRONTATION

Arthur turned. He looked at Adrian standing in the doorway. He looked at me standing behind the desk. Cornered. Trapped. With nowhere left to run.
“You were like a father to me,” Adrian said, his voice cracking. “I trusted you with everything. My money. My family. My life. And all along… you were paying people to kill my children.”
Arthur’s lip curled. “Your father cheated me. He promised—”
“My father kept his word,” Adrian cut in sharply. “He paid you fairly for forty years. Gave you status. Respect. Security. You wanted more than was yours. And you were willing to murder children to get it.”
He took a slow step forward.
“Drop the gun, Arthur. This ends now.”
Arthur’s knuckles turned white as he tightened his grip. He looked at me. Then at Adrian. Then back at the door.
“Step aside,” he said. “Or I shoot her.”
Adrian did not flinch. “If you pull that trigger… you die before you reach the hallway. You know I never miss. Choose.”
For a long, terrible moment, no one moved. The silence stretched tight as a wire. I could hear Arthur’s ragged breathing. I could hear my own heartbeat thudding in my ears. Outside, a distant clock began to chime the hour.
Arthur made his choice.
He shifted aim toward Adrian and raised his hand.
Adrian fired.
One sharp, deafening crack.
Arthur staggered back, the gun clattering to the floor. He gripped his shoulder, blood seeping through his fingers, staring at Adrian in shock.
“I aimed to wound,” Adrian said. “Next time… I will aim to kill.”
Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder with every second. Arthur sank into a chair, defeated, pale, staring at nothing. Adrian stepped forward, kicked the pistol away, and stood over him.
“The guards were never dismissed,” Adrian said quietly. “We watched you enter. We let you believe you were alone long enough to confess. Everything you said… was recorded. Every threat. Every confession. There is nowhere left to run, Arthur.”
The doors burst open. Guards poured in. Followed by police. Arthur was helped to his feet, cuffs clicked around his wrists. He walked out without another word, head bowed, the weight of his betrayal finally crushing him.
Adrian rushed to me. He caught me as my legs gave way. Held me tight.
“It is over,” he whispered into my hair. “Every threat. Every shadow. They are all gone. Julian. Clara. Vanessa. Marcus. And now Arthur. We are free, Grace. Truly free at last.”
I leaned against him, trembling, the adrenaline draining away leaving only exhaustion.
“Clara saved us,” I whispered. “In the end… she saved us all.”

Adrian was quiet for a long moment. Then he held me tighter.
“Yes,” he said. “She did.”
