Chapter 7 - THE FACE IN THE BACKGROUND

I spent two days in the hospital. Adrian barely left my side. He slept in the chair beside my bed, his hand always resting on mine, his gaze never straying far. Lily and Noah were brought to visit each morning, their soft hugs and quiet kisses the best medicine I could have asked for.
When the doctor told me I was strong enough to return home, Adrian did not take me back to the mansion. Instead, he drove us to a smaller, fortified house deep within the city. High walls. Electronic gates. Guards posted at every entrance.
“Until we know exactly who we are fighting,” he said quietly as he carried me across the threshold, “no one enters. No one leaves. And absolutely no one knows where we are.”
Inside, he sat me down in the most secure room, locked the door, and placed a thick manila folder upon the table.
“Clara and Marcus are in custody,” he began. “Marcus confessed almost immediately. He named names. Dates. Payments. But he claims he never met the person above Clara. All instructions arrived through coded letters, left in a safety deposit box. Untraceable.”
“And Clara?” I asked.
Adrian’s jaw tightened. “She refuses to speak to anyone but me. She says she will only tell the truth if I promise to keep her alive. Otherwise… she takes every secret to her grave.”
“Then go to her,” I said. “Make her speak.”
Adrian reached across the table and covered my hand with his.
“There is something else you need to see first. Something Marcus handed over before they led him away.”
He opened the folder and withdrew a photograph. An old group portrait taken at his first wife’s funeral. Adrian stood in the center, grief‑stricken, holding Lily. Friends and relatives ringed them on all sides.
Adrian turned the photograph over and pointed to a blurry figure standing far in the background, half‑hidden behind a pillar.
“I had the image enhanced,” he said. “Look closely.”
I leaned forward. The face came into focus. Sharp features. Pale eyes. A thin, cruel mouth.
I did not recognize the man. But something about him felt familiar. As if I had seen him in passing. Heard his name whispered.
“Who is he?” I asked.
Adrian’s voice dropped low and hard.
“Julian Harrington. My father’s older brother. The man who was written out of the will twenty years ago. The man who vanished to Europe and was never spoken of again.”
My heart sank. “Why is he here?”
“That is what I intend to find out.” Adrian leaned back, his gaze fixed on the stranger’s face. “Marcus says Julian contacted Clara five years ago. Promised her wealth, status, everything she had ever been denied. All she had to do was help him remove me from the line of succession. To do that… she had to remove my children first. And then you.”
He paused and looked at me, his expression heavy with guilt.
“I thought this was a family quarrel. A bitter cousin and a greedy advisor. But Julian… he has hated my branch of the family since long before I was born. Clara was his tool. Vanessa was his distraction. Marcus was his hands. And we… we were just obstacles standing in his way.”
“He is not here,” I said slowly. “He is in Europe.”
Adrian reached out and tapped the face in the photograph once more.
“He returned three months ago. The week Vanessa locked the children in the doghouse. He has been in this country all along. Watching. Giving orders. Waiting for Clara to finish what she started.”
Adrian closed the folder.
“Clara knows where he is. She knows his plans. And she is terrified of him. More terrified of him than she is of prison.”
“Then we have to speak with her,” I said. “Before Julian realizes she has been taken. Before he silences her.”
Adrian stood and walked to the window, staring out at the high stone wall and the guard standing watch beneath the lamp.
“Tomorrow morning,” he said. “I will go to the detention center alone. You will stay here with the children and extra security. If Clara will not speak freely… perhaps she will listen to reason when she understands exactly who protects her and who intends to kill her.”

He turned back to me, his eyes dark and determined.
“One way or another, Grace. Tomorrow we learn the truth. About Julian. About why he wants us gone. And about the secret this family has been hiding for three generations.”
