Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Block|

Three weeks later, the morning sun washed over the bustling intersection of Fourth and Elm.

The brown paper covering the windows of Leo’s Bakery was finally torn down. The sweet, rich scent of fresh espresso, warm vanilla, and baked sfogliatelle filled the morning air once again.

A crowd of local neighborhood residents gathered outside, cheering as Leo—a young man with bright eyes and a flour-dusted apron—cut a red ribbon across the front doors.

Standing across the street, leaning against a sleek black SUV, were Vincent and Tessa.

Tessa wore an elegant dark coat, her lip fully healed, a warm smile spreading across her face as she watched her brother hug his first customers.

"He looks happy," Vincent noted softly.

"He is," Tessa replied, looking up at him. "He thinks an anonymous investor bought out his old debt and gave him a fresh start."

"It's better he thinks that," Vincent said. "The Costa name carries too much weight on these streets."

Tessa looked at the neighborhood—the local shops, the families walking freely without the shadow of extortion hanging over them. Over the past three weeks, Vincent had systematically dismantled his protection rackets across the south side, transitioning his syndicate's assets into legitimate trade and infrastructure.

"You've changed things, Vincent," Tessa said softly.

"I changed what needed to be changed," Vincent answered, taking her hand gently into his. "Because someone washed my face and told me the truth."
