Chapter 3 - A Spark in the Dark|

Before leaving, Tessa crossed to the corner of the room. A soft click followed, and low, warm jazz swept over the sterile space, undercutting the mechanical beep of the heart monitor.

"I saw the vinyl collection in your study while dusting," Tessa said from the doorway. "Thought you’d rather hear Coltrane than that stupid machine. See you tomorrow, Mr. Costa."

When the door clicked shut, Vincent lay beneath the music. For the first time in years, the cold machinery of his empire felt distant. For the first time in even longer, he felt completely human—and the realization terrified him.

By the third night, the artificial immobility was agonizing. Pain settled deep into his back, his throat was dry, and a dull headache pulsed behind his eyes.

Outside, a thunderstorm battered the estate's reinforced windows. Vincent had decided he was done pretending. Tomorrow, he would signal Matteo, lock down the estate, and purge the syndicate starting with Lorenzo and Camila.

He was mentally arranging the logistics when the door opened.

Not the cleaning cart. Not heels. A soft, heavy, wet footstep.

Every instinct honed over twenty years of street warfare snapped awake. The room smelled of rain, ozone, and gun oil. Someone had bypassed his outer guards.

Vincent forced his breathing to remain slow, though his heart hammered against his ribs.

Through narrowed eyelids, he saw a tall figure in a dripping dark raincoat holding a suppressed pistol. The man reached out with a pillow, aiming to muffle the execution.

Vincent tightened his core, preparing to throw his weakened body forward to fight for his life.

Suddenly, the bathroom door swung open. Tessa stepped out with fresh towels and froze.

The gunman turned, swinging the barrel toward her chest.

"Run!" Vincent screamed internally.

Tessa did not run. She hurled the stack of heavy towels straight into the assassin's face.
