Chapter 8 - The Sanctuary|

Twenty minutes later, I was sitting in the back of Ronin's sleek, bulletproof Maybach as it glided through the rainy streets of Pittsburgh.

Ronin sat beside me, looking out the tinted window, giving me space. He hadn't spoken a word since we left the tower lobby.

"Where are we going?" I asked softly, clutching my purse in my lap.

"To my estate in Sewickley," Ronin answered without turning his head. "Preston knows where your apartment is. He knows where your sister lives. My home is the only place in this county where he cannot reach you."

I swallowed hard. "Ronin... what happened downstairs... he's going to file charges. He's a prosecutor."

Ronin let out a quiet, dark chuckle. "Let him try. By four o'clock today, the District Attorney's office will receive an anonymous package containing financial records of Preston's offshore accounts and three affidavits from women he harassed in law school."

I gasped, looking at him in shock. "How... how do you have those?"

Ronin turned his head to look at me, his gray eyes steady. "I've had a file on Preston Vance since the day you brought him to the company Christmas party two years ago, Laurel."

My heart hammered against my ribs. "You... you investigated him back then?"

May you like

"I investigate anyone who comes close to the people I care about," Ronin said plainly. "I waited for you to see what he was on your own. My only regret is waiting too long."

The car turned through a set of massive wrought-iron gates, climbing a winding driveway surrounded by dense oak trees, stopping in front of a sprawling stone manor.
