Chapter 6 - The Confrontation|

"I have a legal right to see my fiancée!" Preston was shouting, pointing a finger at the security guards. "I am an officer of the court! You can't detain me in a public building!"
Ronin walked forward slowly, his hands resting casually in his suit pockets.
"This is not a public building, Mr. Vance," Ronin said smoothly, his voice echoing off the high marble ceilings. "This is Calder Tower. And you are trespassing."
Preston spun around, adjusting his tie, trying to puff out his chest. "Ah, Calder. Just the man I wanted to see. Your secretary isn't answering her phone. I know you overwork her, but she's coming to lunch with me now."
"She isn't going anywhere with you," Ronin said softly.
Preston let out a dry, condescending laugh. "Excuse me? Who do you think you are? You don't own her. She's my wife-to-be."
Ronin stopped two paces away from Preston. The height difference was subtle, but the difference in aura was staggering. Preston looked like a boy playing dress-up; Ronin looked like an apex predator evaluating a minor inconvenience.
"She was your fiancée," Ronin corrected, his gray eyes turning into chips of slate. "Until you laid your hand on her wrist last night."
Preston froze. A flicker of genuine panic crossed his eyes before his professional political mask slammed back into place.

"I don't know what lies she's been telling you," Preston scoffed, stepping closer. "Laurel is prone to exaggeration. She's clumsy. She bumped into a kitchen counter—"
Ronin moved so fast no one in the lobby saw it coming.
