Chapter 13 - The Unbroken Promise|

Six months later.

The grand opening gala of the Calder Sanctuary for Women was held at the Pittsburgh Art Museum.

Over four hundred prominent citizens, community leaders, and journalists attended the event. The atmosphere was radiant, filled with classical music, white orchids, and bright hope for the future.

I stood on the main balcony overlooking the grand foyer, wearing an exquisite emerald silk dress, holding a glass of sparkling water.

Footsteps approached behind me.

Ronin stepped onto the balcony, looking effortlessly handsome in a black tuxedo. He wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin softly on my shoulder.

"You look breathtaking, Miss Monroe," he whispered in my ear.

"And you look like a man who shouldn't be slacking off at his own charity event," I teased, leaning back into his solid warmth.

Down below in the lobby, Gideon stood guard near the entrance, ensuring everything ran flawlessly. Preston Vance was currently serving a four-year sentence in a federal facility, his career completely destroyed, his name erased from the city's political landscape.

"I built a lot of things in this city, Laurel," Ronin said softly, looking out at the happy crowd below. "Shipping lines, towers, real estate. But this... this is the first thing I've ever built that actually matters."

I turned around in his arms, resting my hands against his crisp white shirt, looking up into his dark, loving gray eyes.

"You saved my life, Ronin," I murmured.

"No, Laurel," Ronin corrected, bending down to kiss my forehead with soft, eternal devotion. "You gave me one."
