Chapter 16 - THE LAST BETRAYAL|

Richard Sloane agreed to meet the police at the downtown office building on Saturday evening.

The investigators arranged a controlled operation with the cooperation of Margaret Ellis and Adrien's security team. Richard would be given an opportunity to surrender the documents and explain his involvement.

Adrien remained at the command center.

He had promised Clare he would not turn the confrontation into another personal war, and he intended to keep that promise.

Maya monitored the surveillance feeds while detectives entered the building.

Richard appeared at the appointed time, carrying a black briefcase.

He looked tired.

When the lead detective approached, Richard placed the briefcase on the table.

“I want legal representation before I say anything.”

“You're entitled to that,” the detective replied. “First, we need to secure the materials you brought.”

Richard nodded.

Inside the briefcase were financial ledgers, correspondence, and copies of internal communications. Several documents implicated Richard in the transfer of funds to Marcus Reed and the provision of security information to Damian Cross.

Others revealed that Richard had been concealing suspicious payments for years.

The evidence was serious.

It was also incomplete.

Richard had removed several files from the original collection, including records that could identify the people who had approved the transfers.

The investigators began documenting the materials.

Then Richard asked to speak with Adrien.

The detective refused to allow a private conversation, but Adrien agreed to participate through a recorded video link.

Richard appeared on the screen.

“You've changed,” he said.

Adrien sat motionless.

“Have I?”

“You used to understand how the world works. You knew that keeping a business alive required difficult decisions.”

“Is that what you called arranging an attack on my sister?”

Richard's expression tightened.

“I never ordered Marcus to kill Lily.”

“You helped him reach her.”

“I wanted you distracted. Damian was supposed to take the blame, and you were supposed to retaliate. The conflict would have weakened both sides.”

“And Clare?”

Richard looked away.

“She wasn't part of the plan.”

“You knew she was injured.”

“Yes.”

“You knew someone had targeted Noah.”

Richard swallowed.

“I didn't authorize the kidnapping.”

“But you supplied information that made it possible.”

Richard did not answer.

Adrien leaned closer to the camera.

“You spent fifteen years telling me loyalty meant protecting the organization.”

“It does.”

“No. Loyalty means telling the truth when the truth is expensive.”

Richard's face reddened.

“You think you can survive without people like me? Your company is built on decisions you don't want to remember. If the documents are released, you'll lose everything.”

Adrien looked at the evidence on the table.

“Then I'll lose what I deserve to lose.”

For the first time, Richard seemed genuinely frightened.

The police secured the remaining files through a court-authorized search of his office and financial accounts. Additional evidence established his role in the conspiracy.

He was arrested that evening.

As the officers escorted him out, he turned toward the camera.

“You'll regret this.”

Adrien watched him disappear.

Then he shut off the screen.

Maya entered the room.

“It's over.”

“Not yet. The prosecutors still have to examine everything.”

She smiled faintly.

“You know what I mean.”

Adrien looked exhausted.

He had spent years treating the organization as an extension of himself. Every challenge to its authority felt like a challenge to his identity.

Now he was prepared to let independent investigators determine what survived.

At the mansion, Clare was waiting in the garden.

“How did it go?”

“Richard is in custody. The evidence is secured.”

She exhaled.

“I'm glad.”

Adrien sat beside her.

“Some of the documents may expose things I've done. Decisions I made. People I failed to question.”

Clare took his hand.

“Then face them.”

“What if the consequences are worse than I expect?”

“Then you'll face those, too.”

He looked at her.

“You make it sound simple.”

“No. I make it sound possible.”

He laughed softly.

For several minutes, they sat beneath the garden lights, listening to the fountain.

Then Adrien turned toward her.

“I love you.”

Clare's expression changed.

He continued before she could answer.

“I don't expect you to say it back. I don't want you to feel responsible for what happens to me. I simply don't want to hide behind silence anymore.”

Clare looked down at their hands.

“I care about you, Adrien.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“I'm still learning how to trust you.”

“I understand.”

“And I need time.”

“You'll have it.”

She leaned against his shoulder.

For now, that was enough.

But as the investigation expanded, a new problem emerged.

Damian Cross had agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in exchange for consideration regarding his own involvement. He claimed Richard had manipulated both organizations for years.

He also offered evidence that could prove the original warehouse betrayal had been orchestrated by someone even more dangerous.

A man who had disappeared long before Adrien built his empire.

A man whose name had been removed from every official record.

Victor Hail.
