Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT NOAH DISAPPEARED|

Noah disappeared at four seventeen on a rainy Thursday afternoon.

He had been in the mansion library, finishing a school assignment, when a delivery driver arrived at the side entrance with a package addressed to Clare.

The housekeeper checked the label and discovered that the package contained medical supplies.

Because Clare had been expecting a replacement device from the clinic, the driver was allowed to leave it in the reception area after the delivery was verified.

Noah later told Lily he wanted to check whether the package contained the stickers he had ordered for his school project.

He left the library.

He never returned.

At first, nobody panicked. The mansion had several gardens, a greenhouse, and a long corridor connecting the library to the music room.

Then Lily found Noah's backpack beside the side entrance.

His phone lay on the floor.

Maya ordered an immediate security sweep.

The gates were locked. Every exterior camera was reviewed. The guards checked the garden, the garages, and the surrounding property.

Noah was nowhere.

Clare arrived from work twenty minutes later.

When she saw the police cars, she dropped her bag.

“Where's Noah?”

Adrien approached her.

“We're looking for him.”

“What do you mean, looking for him?”

“He left the library, and we lost track of him.”

Clare stared at him.

“You promised he would be safe.”

“I know.”

“Then where is my brother?”

Her voice broke.

Adrien had no answer.

Clare rushed through the mansion, calling Noah's name. She checked his bedroom, the library, the kitchen, and the garden.

When she reached the empty music room, she stopped beside the piano.

Noah's unfinished drawing lay on the bench.

She picked it up with shaking hands.

It showed a group of people standing beneath a sun. Lily had been added beside Clare and Noah, and Adrien stood awkwardly at the edge of the page.

Above them, Noah had written:

My new family. Nobody gets left behind.

Clare sank onto the bench.

For years, she had survived by believing that vigilance could prevent disaster. She checked Noah's medication twice. She counted every dollar. She memorized every bus schedule and every appointment.

But she could not be everywhere.

And now the one thing she had feared most had happened inside a house she had been told was secure.

Adrien knelt beside her.

“We will find him.”

She looked at him with tears in her eyes.

“Don't promise me something you can't control.”

He swallowed.

“Then I'll tell you what I can control. I'll use every legitimate resource available to find him. I won't stop looking, and I won't hide anything from you.”

She nodded shakily.

Maya entered the room carrying a tablet.

“The delivery driver was using a stolen identity. The package contained no medical equipment. It was a distraction.”

“Where did the driver go?” Adrien asked.

“We've traced the vehicle to a parking garage two miles away. It was abandoned.”

Clare stood.

“Did he take Noah?”

“We believe so.”

“Then find him.”

Maya nodded.

The police examined the package and discovered a small tracking device attached to its interior. The device had transmitted the mansion's security layout to an unknown receiver.

A few minutes later, Clare received a message from a blocked number.

A photograph showed Noah sitting in a dimly lit room. He appeared frightened but unharmed.

The message beneath it contained a single demand.

Adrien Voss must surrender the original Pier 14 recordings by midnight.

Clare felt the room tilt.

“They want the recordings.”

Adrien took the phone, his face becoming unreadable.

“Noah is not part of this.”

“Apparently, he is now,” Maya replied.

Adrien looked at Clare.

“The recordings are evidence. We cannot simply hand them to whoever sent this.”

“I'm not asking you to destroy evidence,” Clare said. “I'm asking you to help bring my brother home.”

“We will.”

She gripped the back of the piano bench.

“If they hurt him, I don't know what I'll do.”

Adrien took a slow breath.

“Then let me carry some of that fear with you.”

Clare looked at him.

For once, she did not tell him to leave her alone.

She took his hand.

And together, they began the most terrifying night either of them had ever faced.
