Chapter 13 - THE WAREHOUSE OF BROKEN PROMISES|

The abandoned printing warehouse stood beside the river, its windows dark and its loading doors chained.
Police officers established a perimeter while negotiators attempted to contact the captors. The first response came through a distorted phone line.
“You have the recordings?”
The negotiator answered carefully.
“We have a copy ready for exchange. We need confirmation that the child is unharmed.”
A pause followed.
Then Noah's voice came through the speaker.
“Clare?”
She heard it from the command vehicle and pressed both hands against the window.
“I'm here, baby.”
The negotiator relayed her words.
Noah began to cry.
“I want to go home.”
Clare closed her eyes.
“I know. We're coming for you.”
The captor cut the connection.
Inside the warehouse, Noah sat on a folding chair beneath a hanging work light. His wrists were free, but a man stood near the door with a weapon concealed beneath his coat.
The man introduced himself as Stephen Cole.
Noah did not know the name.
He knew only that Stephen had promised to let him go if Adrien handed over the recordings.
“Why are you doing this?” Noah asked.
Stephen looked uncomfortable.
“Because adults make terrible decisions.”
“Then why do you think taking me makes you better than them?”
The question caught Stephen off guard.
He turned away.
Outside, Adrien watched the negotiators prepare the exchange. He wanted to enter the building himself, but Maya reminded him that the police had established a safer plan.
“You can't protect Noah by making yourself another hostage,” she said.
Adrien's jaw tightened.
“I know.”
“Then trust the team.”
He nodded.
The exchange began at the loading entrance. An officer placed the duplicate recording inside a sealed case and moved it to the designated point.
Nobody approached until the captors confirmed receipt.
Then a side door opened.
Stephen appeared, holding Noah by the shoulder.
Noah's face was pale, but he was standing.
Clare gripped the edge of the command vehicle's seat.
“That's him.”
The negotiator spoke through the loudspeaker.
“Release the child. You can still surrender peacefully.”
Stephen looked toward the street.
He seemed to be calculating his options.
Then another man appeared behind him.
Marcus Reed.
He had escaped custody during a transfer two days earlier after an accomplice created a traffic collision. His appearance changed the situation immediately.
Marcus grabbed Noah and pulled him backward.
“Where's Voss?” he shouted.
Adrien stepped into view from behind the police line.
“I'm here.”
Marcus smiled.
“You finally came.”
“Let the boy go.”
“You know what I want.”
“You wanted me to suffer. You wanted Lily dead. You wanted Noah frightened enough that Clare would never feel safe again.”
Marcus tightened his grip.
“You understand the game now.”
Adrien remained still.
“No. I understand that you're a coward who needs children to make a point.”
Marcus's expression twisted.
For a moment, he looked ready to attack.
Then Noah stomped hard on his foot and twisted away.
Stephen grabbed Marcus's arm, creating the brief distraction Noah needed. The child broke free and ran toward the open doorway.
A police officer caught him and carried him behind the protective line.
Clare was already running from the command vehicle.
“Noah!”
He rushed into her arms.
She dropped to her knees and held him so tightly that he began sobbing against her shoulder.
“I'm sorry,” he cried. “I'm so sorry.”
“None of this is your fault.”
“I wanted to bring you something.”
“You don't have to bring me anything, sweetheart. I just need you safe.”
Behind them, officers moved into the warehouse. Marcus was arrested after a brief struggle, and Stephen surrendered without resistance.
Adrien watched Clare and Noah cling to each other.
He felt relief so powerful it left him unsteady.
Then Maya approached with a message from the investigators.
Stephen had agreed to cooperate.
He claimed Marcus had arranged the kidnapping on behalf of Damian Cross, but he also insisted that Damian had been receiving instructions from someone inside the Voss organization.
Someone who had access to the security schedules, the restaurant employee records, and the family's private movements.
Adrien looked toward the warehouse.
He had spent years guarding his empire against enemies outside his walls.

Now the evidence suggested that someone within those walls had been helping them.
And the next betrayal might come from the one person he had trusted to stand beside him through everything.
