Chapter 2

The ballroom, once a stage for vanity, had transformed into a cage.

The silence was so heavy it felt tangible. Hundreds of the city’s elite stood frozen, their mouths agape, clutching half-filled flutes of champagne. They looked at the heavy, industrial steel barriers that now sealed the room off from the world—impenetrable, cold, and final.

The man who had attacked me, the heir to a fortune that shielded him from every consequence, looked at his trembling reflection in the stainless steel of the nearest door. He turned back to me, his eyes darting frantically toward the security cameras.

"You... you’re insane," he stammered, his voice carrying clearly through the absolute stillness. "My father owns this security firm! He owns the police force! They’ll tear this place apart!"

I didn't answer. I simply tilted my head, listening.

From the hallway behind the barriers, the heavy, rhythmic thud of combat boots hit the marble floor. Thud. Thud. Thud. The sound was coordinated, cold, and professional. It wasn't the sound of the local police. It was the sound of the private, black-ops security team that only the actual owners of this estate—my family—had the authority to deploy.

The ballroom doors shuddered as someone on the other side tapped a code into the lock. The guests scrambled back, tripping over gowns and tuxedos, realizing that the power dynamic in the room had shifted in the blink of an eye.

The doors didn't open. They retracted just enough for a single shadow to fall across the floor.

My father stepped into the light. He wasn't wearing a tuxedo. He was wearing his tactical vest, his face unreadable, his eyes fixed on the man who had dared to bruise his daughter. Behind him, dozens of men in tactical gear fanned out, creating a wall of shadows that effectively isolated my attacker from his laughing, champagne-sipping friends.

The ballroom erupted in a different kind of sound: the muffled sobs of the terrified and the frantic whispers of the influential.

My father didn't speak. He didn't have to. He simply held out a hand. I walked toward him, the blood still on my lip, but my head held high. As I passed my attacker, I stopped, letting the silence draw out.

"You spent your whole life thinking that money makes you untouchable," I said, my voice cutting through the room like a razor. "You thought the doors of this room were for your protection."

I reached up and straightened his disheveled bowtie, the metal barriers reflecting the terror now etched into his face.

"Tonight, you learn the difference between being wealthy... and being powerful."

My father moved forward, his presence alone forcing the man to his knees. The heir looked around for his friends—the ones who had cheered for him minutes ago. They were all against the wall now, faces pale, hands raised, praying they wouldn't be associated with him.

"Lock the doors," my father repeated my command, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. "And turn off the cameras. We have a private matter to discuss regarding the 'heir' to a legacy he no longer possesses."

As the lights in the ballroom flickered and dimmed, I walked toward the exit with my father. Behind us, the screaming began.

The gala was over. The hunt had just begun.
