Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT DANIEL CHOSE HIS FAMILYDaniel returned home determined to restore control.

He found Margaret in the sitting room and demanded that she persuade Arthur to withdraw the audit request.

Margaret listened carefully.

Then she asked a question he did not expect.

"Did you know about the subsidiary guarantees?"

Daniel hesitated.

"I knew the financing was complicated."

"That isn't an answer."

"I believed the exposure could be managed."

Margaret looked at him for a long moment.

"Then you should have disclosed the risk."

"You're supposed to be on my side."

"I am on the side of this family."

"Exactly."

Margaret stood.

"The family cannot survive if you confuse loyalty with obedience."

Daniel stared at her.

He had spent years believing his mother would support him regardless of his decisions. Now he understood that she supported him only while his success protected the family's status.

That evening, Vanessa hosted a dinner for several friends and business associates.

Claire had planned to spend the evening in the library, but Margaret insisted she join them.

"People are asking questions," Margaret said. "You should show them that everything is normal."

Claire recognized the demand for what it was.

Still, she attended.

During dinner, one guest asked Daniel about the acquisition.

"We've encountered a few technical questions," he replied. "Nothing that cannot be resolved."

Claire looked down at her plate.

The statement was technically possible but misleading. The audit had not established that the deal could be completed safely.

Another guest smiled.

"Your wife must be relieved. She doesn't have to worry about business."

Daniel glanced at Claire.

"Claire prefers a simpler life."

The words landed like a slap.

She put down her fork.

"Actually, I prefer accurate financial disclosures."

The table fell silent.

Daniel's cheeks reddened.

"This is a private dinner."

"And the acquisition is a public-company matter involving investors who deserve accurate information."

Vanessa gave a nervous laugh.

"Claire, nobody wants a lecture."

"Then nobody should ask me to pretend the problem doesn't exist."

Margaret rose.

"That is enough."

Claire looked at her mother-in-law.

"No. It isn't."

Her voice remained calm, but every person at the table was listening.

"I have spent months accepting responsibilities that were never mine. I have been expected to serve your guests, manage your household, and remain silent when my husband makes mistakes. I did those things because I loved Daniel and wanted this family to succeed."

She looked directly at her husband.

"But I will not help you conceal a risk that could harm hundreds of employees and investors."

Daniel pushed back his chair.

"You think you're better than us because of your father's money."

Claire's expression changed.

"No. I think I'm responsible for what I know."

She left the dining room.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Margaret turned to Daniel.

"You should have stopped her before she said that."

Daniel stared at his mother.

"You just watched her humiliate me."

Margaret's face hardened.

"You humiliated yourself."

He looked at Vanessa, expecting support.

His sister lowered her eyes.

For the first time, the family had not united behind him.

Daniel went upstairs and found Claire packing a small suitcase.

"Where are you going?"

"To a hotel."

"You're leaving because of one argument?"

"I'm leaving because I don't recognize the man I married."

He reached for her hand.

"Claire, wait."

She stepped back.

"I loved you when you were a man who could admit he was wrong. I don't know what happened to you."

Daniel looked at the suitcase.

"Are you asking for a divorce?"

"I'm asking for space to decide whether there's anything left to save."

She walked past him.

He did not follow.

By morning, Claire had left the estate.

And Daniel had finally achieved the one thing he had been trying to avoid.

May you like

He had driven away the only person who had ever challenged him because she believed he could be better.
