Chapter 14 - VANESSA'S SECRETVanessa finally provided her attorney with the document she had signed.

It was a transfer authorization connected to a family investment subsidiary. The document had been presented to her as routine paperwork, but the attachment identified a payment to Northstar Advisory.

The amount was $4.6 million.

Vanessa had not received the money personally. The records suggested it had been transferred to an account associated with the old reserve structure.

Nevertheless, her signature had authorized the transaction.

When investigators asked her about it, Vanessa initially insisted she had done nothing wrong.

"I was told the transfer was approved," she said. "I didn't manage the accounts."

"Did you read the attachment?"

"No."

"Did you ask what Northstar Advisory did?"

"No."

"Why not?"

Vanessa looked down.

"Because my mother said it was a family matter."

The investigator made a note.

"Did you benefit from the transfer?"

"I don't believe so."

"Can you provide evidence supporting that answer?"

Vanessa hesitated.

She had spent years believing that the Whitmore name protected her from consequences. Now she understood that signing a document created responsibility even when she did not understand every detail.

She agreed to provide her emails and financial records.

Later, she approached Claire in the library.

"I gave them everything."

Claire nodded.

"Good."

Vanessa looked surprised.

"You're not going to tell me how terrible I am?"

"I think you already know what you did wrong."

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"I used to think you were pretending to be better than us."

"I never thought I was better than you."

"You always seemed so calm."

Claire gave a sad smile.

"Calm doesn't mean I wasn't hurt."

Vanessa sat down.

"I hated that Daniel listened to you. When you corrected him, I felt as though you were making the rest of us look stupid."

"I wasn't trying to make anyone look stupid."

"I know that now."

Vanessa twisted her hands together.

"Mom says the investigation will destroy the family."

Claire considered her words.

"An investigation can expose wrongdoing. It can also establish that some people acted honestly. The truth may hurt, but hiding it doesn't make the problem disappear."

Vanessa nodded.

"There is something else. I found a message from my mother to Northstar Advisory. She said the reserve account should remain under family control regardless of what the trustees decided."

Claire felt her pulse quicken.

"When was the message sent?"

"Six months ago."

That meant Margaret had been communicating with the entity long after Arthur's retirement and long after the trust should have been operating under independent oversight.

"Do you have the original message?"

"Yes."

"Give it to your attorney. Preserve the full email chain."

Vanessa looked toward the door.

"Do you think Mom knew about the money?"

"I think the evidence needs to answer that question."

For once, Vanessa did not argue.

As she left the library, Claire noticed that she had stopped wearing the diamond bracelet Margaret had given her for her last birthday.

It was a small change.

But it suggested that Vanessa was beginning to understand the difference between belonging to a powerful family and being protected by it.
