Chapter 15 - THE HEARING THAT SHOOK GREENWICHThe preliminary hearing took place in federal court three weeks later.

It was not a criminal trial, and no one had been convicted of wrongdoing. The court was considering requests to preserve financial records, prevent certain disputed transfers, and determine whether the existing governance arrangements were sufficient to protect the company while the investigation continued.

Reporters gathered outside the courthouse.

Daniel arrived with his attorneys. Margaret followed several minutes later, refusing to answer questions. Arthur entered through a side door with Claire and Evelyn Shaw.

Inside, the judge reviewed the documents.

"The court will not treat allegations as established facts," she said. "The parties must distinguish between documented transactions, disputed interpretations, and claims requiring further investigation."

The Mercer trustees presented the trust agreement and the newly discovered clause.

Their attorney argued that the evidence justified a temporary restriction on certain voting rights until the disputed transactions could be reviewed.

Counsel for the Whitmore family objected.

"The provision was never activated, and its scope remains disputed."

The judge studied the agreement.

"That is precisely why independent review is necessary."

Daniel's attorney argued that the acquisition discrepancies were technical and that the company could still complete the transaction.

The judge asked whether the investors had received accurate information about the subsidiary guarantees.

Counsel requested additional time to investigate.

The court ordered preservation of the relevant records and restricted certain transfers pending further proceedings. It did not transfer ownership of the company or determine that any individual had committed fraud.

Nevertheless, the decision changed the balance of power.

The Whitmore family could no longer treat the trust as a forgotten document.

Outside the courtroom, reporters crowded around Claire.

"Mrs. Whitmore, are you trying to take control of your husband's company?"

"Will you divorce Daniel?"

"How much of the Mercer fortune are you willing to invest?"

Claire paused before answering.

"I'm not here to take revenge on my husband. I'm here because the company must account for its financial decisions. The employees, investors, and families who depend on its services deserve accurate information."

A reporter called out.

"Do you believe Daniel is guilty?"

Claire looked directly at the camera.

"I believe everyone should be judged by the evidence, including my husband and my own family."

Arthur watched her with quiet pride.

Later, in the car, he handed her a copy of the court's order.

"You handled yourself well."

"I told the truth."

"That is not always easy in a room full of people who want a simpler story."

Claire looked out the window.

"People want a villain. They want someone to blame so they don't have to examine the system that allowed the problem to grow."

Arthur nodded.

"Your father used to say the same thing."

Her phone vibrated.

A message from Samuel Price.

We have located the original Northstar Advisory registration records. The controlling member was not Richard Mercer.

Claire read the sentence twice.

"Arthur, look at this."

He examined the message.

"Then who controlled it?"

Samuel sent a second message.

The controlling member was listed under a trust established by an individual whose name had been sealed for years.

The name was about to be released through a formal legal process.

Claire felt the investigation shifting beneath her feet.

They had found the money trail.

But the person who had controlled the account might be someone neither family had expected.
