Chapter 9 - A New DawnOne year after the wake.

The historic Carter Estate—the house where I had woken up in a casket twelve months ago—had been completely transformed.
The dark dining room where the funeral lilies had stood was demolished and rebuilt into a magnificent, glass-walled conservatory garden filled with blooming white orchids, jasmine, and yellow sunflowers.
The estate had been converted into the headquarters for the Elena Carter Foundation for Victims of Domestic & Financial Abuse—a multi-million-dollar non-profit organization I funded to provide free legal protection, forensic accounting, and safe housing for women in crisis across South Carolina.
On a warm Saturday afternoon in October, over two hundred prominent community leaders, supporters, and surviving women gathered in the sunlit garden for the foundation's official opening ceremony.
I stood at the podium wearing an elegant emerald-green gown, my grandmother’s gold chain sparkling brightly against my collarbone.
The crowd erupted into a roaring standing ovation as I finished my keynote address.
As the applause echoed through the glass conservatory, I stepped down from the stage, walking directly toward the terrace where Marcus stood waiting for me.
Marcus wore a tailored charcoal suit, looking striking, handsome, and completely devoted.
He extended his hand to me. I placed my fingers into his, feeling the steady, invincible warmth that had helped heal my soul.

“You built something breathtaking, Elena,” Marcus whispered, pulling me close against his chest as we looked out over the blooming garden.
“We built it out of the dark, Marcus,” I smiled softly, looking up into his warm brown eyes. “We showed them that life always wins.”
