BURIED IN THE LIGHT / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - The Trap SpringsThe conference room erupted into absolute, chaotic noise.

Arthur Pendelton, Daniel’s attorney, jumped out of his chair, backing away toward the window. “What is the meaning of this?! Who is this woman?!”

“This is Mrs. Elena Carter,” Detective Torres announced firmly, pulling an official federal arrest warrant from his jacket pocket. “The living, breathing subject of the insurance claim your client was just attempting to execute.”

“Daniel!” Monica screamed, clutching her throat, tears of pure panic running down her face. “You said she was dead! You said the hospital signed the certificate!”

“Shut up, Monica!” Daniel roared, turning on her, his suave persona completely shattering into ugly, desperate rage. “Shut your damn mouth!”

“Mr. Daniel Carter and Miss Monica Vance,” Detective Torres barked, stepping forward as his officers unholstered steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for attempted capital murder, felony insurance fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement.”

“No! Get your hands off me!” Daniel shrieked, trying to pull away as two heavy officers grabbed his arms, slamming him face-first onto the polished mahogany conference table.

The metallic snap-snap of handcuffs locking around Daniel’s wrists echoed through the room.

Monica collapsed onto her knees beside her overturned chair, weeping hysterically as a female officer pinned her wrists behind her back.

I walked over to Monica, kneeling down gently beside her, and reached out my hand.

With a swift, smooth motion, I unclasped my grandmother’s gold chain from around her neck, pulling the precious metal back into my palm where it belonged.

“You always wanted everything that was mine, Monica,” I whispered softly into her ear, my voice cold as winter ice. “Now, you can have my sisterly advice: hire a very good lawyer.”

I stood up, wrapping the gold chain securely around my own neck, feeling the cool, familiar weight of the pendant rest against my chest.

Daniel lifted his sweating, bruised face from the table, looking at me with eyes full of pathetic, desperate pleading.

“Elena! Please!” Daniel wept, tears smearing his face. “I was manipulated by Monica! She brought the poison! She convinced me to do it! I love you, Elena! Please, don't do this to me!”

I looked down at the man I had spent seven years loving, feeling zero anger, zero regret—only a profound, beautiful sense of complete freedom.

“You told me in my casket that I was too smart for my own good, Daniel,” I said quietly. “You were wrong. I was just smart enough to survive you.”
