BURIED IN THE LIGHT / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The ReclamationThree months after the trial.

The morning sun broke gently over the Charleston harbor, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of liquid gold, soft rose, and deep violet.

I stood in the executive corner office on the top floor of the Carter Logistics building—the office that had once belonged to my father, then briefly to Daniel.

The old furniture had been completely removed, replaced by modern, sunlit glass tables, vibrant green plants, and warm hardwood accents. The dark, suffocating memories of the past had been systematically erased.

As the sole remaining heir and majority shareholder, I formally assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer of Carter Logistics.

My mother, Margaret, sat on the velvet sofa near the window, holding a cup of tea, looking at me with eyes full of deep, genuine pride and peace. Her health had improved dramatically once the toxic presence of Daniel and Monica was permanently removed from our lives.

“You look just like your father, Elena,” Margaret said softly, a warm smile gracing her face. “He would be so proud of the way you reclaimed his legacy.”

“We reclaimed it together, Mom,” I smiled, walking over to sit beside her, taking her hand into mine.

A gentle knock sounded at the office door.

Detective Marcus Torres—who had recently resigned from the police force to accept a position as the head of global corporate security for Carter Logistics—stepped into the room holding a leather folder.

“Good morning, CEO,” Marcus smiled, his dark eyes warm and respectful. “The forensic audit of the European shipping routes is complete. All embezzled funds have been fully recovered from the Cayman accounts.”

“That is wonderful news, Marcus,” I replied, standing up to shake his hand. “Thank you.”

Marcus looked at me, a lingering, gentle warmth in his gaze that went far beyond professional respect. Over the past three months, Marcus had been my steady anchor, my fierce protector, and the one man who had stood by my side without asking for anything in return.

“Are you ready for the board meeting, Elena?” Marcus asked softly.

“I’ve been ready my whole life, Marcus,” I answered, holding my head high.
