Chapter 3: The Decision to Let Her Sleep

Alexander ended the call without another word. He closed his laptop and set it on the seat beside him. Then he did something he almost never did: he sat still and simply let the moment be.

His driver, Marcus, glanced in the rearview mirror but said nothing. Marcus had worked for Alexander for eleven years. He knew when to stay silent.

The car continued smoothly through the dark city streets. Alexander found himself studying the sleeping woman more carefully than he should have. There was nothing polished or glamorous about her in that moment. Her hair was pulled back in a messy bun that had started to come loose. Her scrubs were wrinkled and had a small coffee stain near the hem. Dark circles shadowed her eyes even in sleep. Yet something about the complete trust in the way she had surrendered to rest held his attention completely.

Most people in his world never looked that unguarded, even in sleep.

He didn’t wake her.
He didn’t ask questions.
He just let her sleep while the city moved past the windows in quiet streaks of light.
