Chapter 10: The Right Car After All

It took eleven days to deal with the threat permanently. Alexander used every resource he had — legal pressure, private security, and quiet influence most people never saw — until Daniel Kerr was no longer a problem. During those days Olivia stayed in one of Alexander’s secure properties, a quiet penthouse with high windows and soft lighting. They shared early breakfasts before her shifts, long evening conversations, and a growing trust that neither of them had been looking for when this began.

On the twelfth night, Olivia stood in the doorway of the guest bedroom and looked at the man who had once simply let her sleep in his car.

“I got into the wrong car that night,” she said softly.

Alexander walked toward her and stopped close enough that she could feel the warmth of him. He lifted a hand and gently brushed a loose strand of hair from her cheek.

“No,” he answered. “You got into the right one. You just didn’t know it yet.”

Olivia didn’t pull away. Instead she leaned into his touch, finally allowing herself to stop running on empty, finally allowing herself to rest in a way that had nothing to do with sleep.

The exhaustion that had ruled her life for so long began to ease — not because the work at the hospital became easier, but because she no longer had to carry everything alone.

And Alexander, the man who had once watched a stranger fall asleep in his car and felt something fundamental shift inside him, finally understood what it meant to care about someone more than power, control, or the next deal.
