Chapter 3 - The Illusion of Intimacy

The turning point occurred on a rainy Tuesday evening at an upscale hotel lounge.
Eleanor, unaccustomed to heavy drinking, consumed three glasses of aged cognac during a rare moment of relaxed celebration with Jason.
The world melted into warm, blurry hues.
The next morning, she opened her eyes in a luxurious hotel suite.
The morning sun filtered through sheer curtains.
Beside her lay Jason, propped on his elbow, watching her with soft affection.
Eleanor sat up quickly, clutching the crisp white sheet against her collarbone.
Her face flushed crimson as panic and embarrassment flooded her mind.
She remembered almost nothing after leaving the lounge table.
"Did we... did we sleep together?" Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling.
Jason leaned in softly, taking her hands within his broad, warm palms.
He looked deeply into her eyes, his expression brimming with tenderness.
"I didn't want you to wake up feeling like anything that happened was a mistake," Jason murmured gently.
"You are incredible, Eleanor."
Eleanor blushed like a young girl.
In that single, crafted moment, she did not feel seventy-nine.
She felt twenty-nine again.
What Eleanor did not know was the icy, calculated truth.
Nothing physical had transpired between them that night.
Jason had simply realized her memory was foggy from the liquor.
He seized the opportunity to plant a profound lie that bound her heart directly to him.

A week earlier, Jason had paid a private investigator to pull Eleanor's unredacted financial records.
He knew down to the cent what she was worth.
