Chapter 19 - THE LAST NIGHT OF THE VESCARI EMPIRE|

Salvatore's escape forced Dante to make a decision he had avoided for years.

He could use the family's old methods, mobilize every loyal enforcer, and hunt his father through the city's criminal networks.

Or he could let the authorities handle the case, even if that meant risking the exposure of every secret he had inherited.

Nora found him in the study, staring at the old family crest.

“What are you going to do?”

“Find him.”

“With the police?”

“With the police.”

She sat across from him.

“That's a good answer.”

“Don't sound so surprised.”

“I've met you.”

He almost smiled.

Then he showed her a letter Salvatore had sent through an intermediary. It contained a demand for the original ledger and an invitation to meet at the Vescari shipping terminal.

“He wants to destroy the evidence,” Dante said.

“Then we make sure he can't reach it.”

They devised a plan with the investigators. The original ledger, the film, and Isabella's letter were secured in separate locations. The meeting at the terminal would be monitored, and Dante would wear a recording device.

Nora insisted on being part of the operation.

Dante refused at first.

Then he remembered how often his family had made decisions about Nora without asking her.

“You can help from the command vehicle,” he said. “You will not be used as bait.”

“Agreed.”

The terminal was nearly empty when Dante arrived. Rain struck the roof, and the river moved black beneath the lights.

Salvatore stood beside a cargo container.

“You came alone.”

“I came with the truth.”

Dante placed a folder on the table.

Salvatore opened it and found copies of the evidence.

“You think this will destroy me?”

“No. Your choices did that.”

Salvatore's expression hardened.

“You have no idea what it means to carry this family. I built the network that kept us alive.”

“You built a prison and called it a legacy.”

“I made sacrifices.”

“You made victims.”

For a moment, Salvatore looked almost wounded.

Then he drew a gun.

“You are my son.”

Dante didn't move.

“You are the man who fathered me. That is not the same thing as being my father.”

Salvatore's hand trembled.

“You would hand your own blood to the authorities?”

“I would hand a criminal to the authorities.”

The surrounding doors opened. Investigators entered from both sides.

Salvatore fired once and ran toward the river.

Dante followed, but stopped when Salvatore turned and aimed at him again.

Nora watched from the command vehicle, her heart hammering.

“Dante, don't!”

He lowered his weapon.

“You don't have to do this,” he called to Salvatore.

Salvatore laughed bitterly.

“You think mercy will save you?”

“No. I think I am done being you.”

Salvatore's attention flickered toward the approaching investigators.

It was enough.

They disarmed him and forced him to the ground.

As they placed him in handcuffs, he looked at Nora through the rain.

“You have destroyed your own family.”

Nora stepped forward, her voice steady.

“No. We stopped pretending it was worth saving in its old form.”

Salvatore was taken away.

The ledger was entered into evidence. The financial records connected the family to years of illegal activity, corruption, and violence. Several officials resigned. Multiple companies were placed under investigation, and the Vescari empire began to fracture.

Dante surrendered documents and cooperated fully.

The cost was enormous.

But the truth survived.

That night, Nora returned to the hospital and sat beside Isabella until dawn.

When her grandmother woke, Nora told her everything.

Salvatore had been arrested. Aurelio was safe. Dante was alive. The evidence was finally in the hands of people who could not be silenced so easily.

Isabella cried quietly.

“Then I can rest.”

Nora kissed her forehead.

“Yes, Nonna. You can rest.”

But before closing her eyes, Isabella caught Nora's hand.

“There is one more thing I want you to know.”

May you like

Nora leaned closer.

“Your mother would have been proud of you.”
