Chapter 10 - THE BELL THAT REMEMBERED|

The family chapel stood at the edge of the Vescari estate, separated from the main house by a garden and a narrow stone path.

Nora had never seen anything so beautiful and so unsettling. Candles burned beneath stained-glass windows. Marble saints watched from alcoves. At the center stood an old bronze bell on a wooden platform.

The bell had been recovered from a church in Sicily decades earlier.

Now its surface was covered with scratches.

Someone had tried to force open the base.

Dante examined the damage while Marcus searched the chapel.

“What does the message say?” Nora asked.

Dante handed her a photograph.

The words were written in the old dialect.

The bell remembers who silenced it.

Nora ran her fingers over the bronze.

Her grandmother had once told her that every village had a bell that marked births, deaths, weddings, and warnings. The bell in Calatrano had been rung on the night Isabella disappeared.

Aurelio joined them, leaning heavily on his cane.

“My father ordered the bell removed after the church was destroyed. He said it was a relic. I believe he wanted to erase the memory of that night.”

“Can it be opened?” Nora asked.

Marcus examined the base.

“There may be a compartment beneath the platform.”

They lifted the bell carefully. A small metal box had been hidden beneath the wooden support.

Inside lay a folded letter, a strip of film, and a child's bracelet.

Nora recognized the bracelet immediately.

It was identical to the one stolen from her apartment, except this one was made of silver.

Aurelio covered his mouth.

“Isabella's daughter wore that when she was born.”

Nora unfolded the letter.

The handwriting belonged to her grandmother.

If you have found this, then the truth has survived longer than the people who tried to bury it. The ledger is not the only evidence. The film shows the meeting where my father ordered the disappearance of my child. Aurelio was present. Salvatore was present. And the man who carried out the order was not a stranger.

Nora looked up.

“Who was it?”

Dante took the strip of film to a lightbox in the chapel's storage room. The images were grainy, but several faces were visible.

One was Aurelio.

One was Salvatore.

The third was a younger man with a distinctive scar near his ear.

Paolo Greco.

The fourth man stood with his back to the camera.

But Nora recognized the ring on his right hand.

It was the same ring Dante wore.

She turned toward him.

“Who is that?”

Dante stared at the image.

“My father.”

Aurelio sank into a chair.

“He wasn't supposed to be there.”

Nora felt her stomach twist.

“You said he wanted to dismantle the criminal operations.”

“He did,” Aurelio whispered. “But not before he made a terrible choice.”

Dante looked at his father.

“What choice?”

Aurelio could barely speak.

“He gave the order to hide Isabella's daughter. He believed it was the only way to keep Salvatore from using her as leverage.”

Nora stepped back.

“My mother was taken because your father wanted to protect his family?”

Aurelio shook his head, tears gathering in his eyes.

“No. Your mother was taken because our father wanted to control the ledger.”

He looked at Dante.

“And your father helped him.”
