Chapter 8 - Tomas’s Secret
As winter set in, Tomas became a staple at the kitchen, helping Mateo prep vegetables every afternoon after school. However, Lucia noticed the boy’s grades were slipping and he often fell asleep at the prep station. Investigating quietly, she discovered that Tomas’s mother was working three cleaning shifts a day to pay off debts left behind by an abusive ex-partner, leaving Tomas to care for his younger sister alone at night. Lucia realized that providing hot meals was only the first layer of defense; these families needed structural legal protection to truly break free.
