Chapter 18 - The Woman They Tried to Silence

|
The accusation against Nora arrived the following morning.
Victor Hale's attorneys claimed she had accessed restricted financial systems, copied confidential records, and created a false narrative to damage the acquisition process.
They suggested that her injuries had made her unreliable and that Raphael had influenced her testimony.
The allegations were carefully worded.
They did not directly accuse Nora of causing the fraud. They simply attempted to make every piece of evidence she provided appear questionable.
Raphael wanted to respond immediately.
Nora stopped him.
"Don't."
"They're trying to discredit you."
"I know."
"Then we need to challenge the accusation."
"Through the evidence. Not through threats."
He looked at her.
She continued, "If you respond publicly by attacking them, they'll say you're intimidating witnesses. Let the investigators see the records."
Raphael took a breath.
"You're right."
The legal team filed a formal response with the authenticated records, access logs, and copies of the original transactions. They also provided documentation showing that Nora's access had been authorized for legitimate accounting work.
The investigators interviewed her with her attorney present.
Nora answered every question carefully. She explained how she had discovered the discrepancies, why she copied the records, and how she had hidden the ledger after suspecting someone was monitoring her work.
She did not pretend to know who had ordered the attack.
She did not exaggerate what the evidence proved.
When asked why she had climbed forty-two floors instead of seeking medical help, she answered honestly.
"Because I believed someone had arranged to make sure I never reached the hospital. I thought the only person who could act on the evidence was Raphael Corsetti."
"Did you trust him?"
"Not completely."
"Then why go to him?"
"Because the evidence belonged to his organization, and because I believed he deserved the chance to see what was being done in his name."
The investigator studied her.
"Even though you feared he might be involved?"
Nora nodded.
"Even then."
The interview ended without charges against her.
Outside, Raphael waited near the exit.
"How did it go?"
"They asked questions. I answered them."
"And?"
"And now we wait."
He offered his arm.
She accepted it as they walked slowly toward the car.
At the curb, Nora stopped.
"Raphael, I need you to understand something."
He turned.
"If this destroys your businesses, I won't pretend the truth was a mistake. If it exposes things you did that are unrelated to the fraud, those things need to be dealt with too."
He looked at her for a long moment.
"You're asking me to accept whatever happens."
"I'm asking you to stop treating the truth as something that only matters when it protects you."
He nodded slowly.
"I will."
That evening, the investigators executed warrants at several offices connected to Peter and Hale. They recovered financial records, communication devices, and draft agreements outlining a proposed acquisition of Raphael's legitimate businesses.
One document contained a timeline.
The plan had been to create enough financial uncertainty to force a sale at a reduced valuation. Peter would receive a management position in the acquiring company. Marcus would be blamed for the original accounting structure. Raphael would face legal exposure, and Nora would be discredited as the employee who had supposedly stolen the records.
The attack was listed as an operational risk.
Not a murder order.
Not a confession.
But the wording made clear that the people behind the scheme had considered the possibility that Nora might be harmed and had proceeded anyway.
The evidence was sent to prosecutors.
Within days, Peter Sloane was taken into custody. Victor Hale was questioned and later charged in connection with the financial scheme and the conspiracy surrounding the attack, based on the evidence collected.
Dominic's conduct was also reviewed. He admitted his role in disabling the camera transfer system and leaving Nora without assistance. His cooperation helped establish the timeline, but it did not erase his responsibility.
Raphael dismissed him from his security position and left the legal consequences to the authorities.
When Nora learned that Peter had been arrested, she did not celebrate.
She sat quietly by the apartment window, looking at the city.
Raphael approached.
"It's over."
She shook her head.
"No. The dangerous part may be over. But there are still people who lost their jobs, people who were frightened into silence, and businesses that need to be repaired."
He sat beside her.
"Then we'll repair them."
Nora looked at him.
"We?"
He met her gaze.
"If you want to help."
May you like
For the first time, she smiled without pain.
"Let's start with the accounting department."
