Chapter 15 - The Ghost From Raphael's Past

|
Marcus Bell had once been Raphael's closest business adviser.
He was older than Raphael by fifteen years, patient where Raphael was impulsive, and skilled at convincing rival groups to negotiate rather than fight. He had helped establish the legitimate companies that now employed hundreds of people.
Then, eight months earlier, he had disappeared after a private meeting in Boston.
His car was found at the airport.
His phone was switched off.
His office was empty.
Raphael had believed Marcus left the country after a disagreement over the future of the organization. He had not pursued him aggressively because Marcus had been clear that he wanted out.
Now his name had appeared on a threat against Nora's family.
Raphael contacted the investigators and shared everything he knew.
They discovered that Marcus had recently communicated with Peter through an encrypted account. The messages were incomplete, but several referenced a plan to remove Raphael from executive control and transfer the legitimate businesses to a new holding company.
Marcus appeared to be the person who had designed the financial structure.
Peter had executed the transfers.
Dominic had provided access to the security systems.
And Nora had found the evidence.
Raphael looked at the timeline and felt a familiar anger rise.
He had trusted Marcus because Marcus had helped him survive the most dangerous years of his life.
He had trusted Peter because Peter had managed his businesses efficiently.
He had trusted Dominic because Dominic had stood beside him when everyone else ran.
Three men.
Three different kinds of loyalty.
And now each had become a question he could no longer answer with certainty.
Nora watched him from the couch.
"Do you think Marcus is alive?"
"I think the evidence suggests he is."
"Do you think he arranged the attack?"
"I don't know."
She studied his face.
"You've spent your life believing that knowing people makes you safe."
Raphael looked at her.
"And you think it doesn't?"
"I think knowing people gives you a better chance of recognizing what they're capable of. It doesn't make them incapable of betrayal."
He sat beside her.
"How do you know that?"
Nora was quiet for a moment.
"My father owned a small accounting firm. When I was twenty-three, a business partner used his credentials to falsify records. My father was accused of fraud, lost his clients, and spent years trying to prove what happened. He died before the investigation cleared his name."
Raphael had never heard the story.
Nora continued, "I became an accountant because I wanted to understand how someone could use numbers to destroy another person's life. I learned that money leaves patterns. People leave patterns too."
He looked at her hands.
"Is that why you took the job with me?"
"Partly. You had a reputation for being ruthless, but your legitimate businesses were growing. I thought if I could help keep the records clean, I could do something useful."
"And now?"
She gave a tired smile.
"Now I think you have a lot of paperwork to do."
He laughed quietly.
It was the first time Nora had heard him laugh without an edge of irony.
For a moment, the tension between them softened.
Then Samuel called with new information.
Investigators had located a storage property linked to Marcus Bell. It contained personal belongings, old company records, and a locked cabinet with several documents addressed to Raphael.
The documents had been dated before Marcus disappeared.
One was a letter.
Raphael, if you're reading this, then Peter has moved ahead without me. I tried to stop him, but he has people inside the security department and access to the financial systems. Do not trust the first person who offers to help you. The person who designed the scheme is not necessarily the person who intends to benefit from it.
The letter ended abruptly.
There was no signature.
But the handwriting matched Marcus's.
Raphael read it in silence.
Nora frowned.
"He's warning you about Peter."
"Or someone else."
She pointed to the final sentence.
"The person who designed the scheme isn't necessarily the person who intends to benefit."
Raphael looked up.
"Marcus designed the original business structure."
"And Peter used it."
"Which means Marcus may have helped build the system without knowing what Peter planned."
"Or he may have known more than he's admitting."
Raphael folded the letter.
For the first time, the investigation pointed beyond the men closest to him.

Someone else had been waiting in the shadows.
And that person might have been the one who brought them all together.
