Chapter 9 - THE ENEMY OF MY ENEMY

Sebastian Vale lived behind iron gates on a wooded estate north of Baltimore.
For years, newspapers had described him as a retired real-estate developer.
Dominic described him with one sentence.
“He smiles when other people are afraid.”
Claire did not plan to meet him.
Then Sebastian called her directly.
“Miss Whitmore.”
His voice was warm and grandfatherly.
“I believe we possess things the other wants.”
Claire stood in Dominic’s office with the phone on speaker.
“What do you have?”
“A recording your mother made the night she died.”
Claire’s heart stopped.
Dominic’s expression sharpened.
Sebastian continued.
“And you have a ledger that belongs to my family.”
“It belonged to my mother.”
“Ownership is such an emotional concept.”
Claire hated him instantly.
“What do you want?”
“The original ledger.”
“No.”
“Then you do not want the tape.”
The line went dead.
Dominic turned to her.
“You are not going.”
Claire gave him a flat look.
“You have known me three days.”
“Long enough.”
“Then you know telling me not to go guarantees I will.”
Dominic exhaled.
“Yes.”
They made a plan instead.
The original ledger went into a bank vault under Claire’s sole authorization.
She carried a high-resolution copy.
Gabriel placed a tracker inside the binder.
Vescari contacted federal agents he still trusted.
Claire insisted on one condition.
No one moved until she heard Anne’s recording.
At Sebastian’s estate, Charles was waiting in the drawing room.
He looked rested.
That enraged Claire more than his threats had.
Sebastian sat beside the fireplace.
He was in his late seventies, silver-haired and elegant.
He looked nothing like the monster Dominic described.
That made him worse.
“Claire.”
He stood and kissed the air near her cheek.
“You have Anne’s eyes.”
Claire did not respond.
Charles sneered.
“Still dramatic.”
Sebastian raised one finger.
“Charles.”
Charles stopped speaking.
Claire noticed.
Her father had spent her whole life dominating rooms.
Here, he obeyed.
Sebastian gestured toward a cassette player on the table.
“You wanted your mother’s voice.”
He pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Anne spoke.
Claire had not heard that voice in fifteen years.
Her knees nearly failed.
If Claire ever hears this, then something has gone wrong.
Claire covered her mouth.
Anne continued.
Charles knows about the ledger.
Daniel is taking me to Vescari tonight.
Vincent promised the route is clear.
If we fail, the copy is in Box 417.
The original is where Charles replaced me.
Claire closed her eyes.
The portrait.
Anne’s voice shook on the tape.
I am afraid for my daughter.
Not because Charles hates her.
Because he loves possession more than he loves people.
Claire felt tears slide down her face.
Charles looked away.
Then Anne said something no one expected.
Sebastian knows.
Dominic’s uncle went still.
Anne continued.
Sebastian knows Charles has been moving cargo for him.
If I disappear, do not trust either family.
Not Whitmore.
Not Vale.
The tape clicked off.
Silence filled the room.
Claire looked at Sebastian.
His pleasant expression had disappeared.
“That was not the whole recording.”
Sebastian smiled again.
“No.”
Dominic moved toward him.
“Play the rest.”
Sebastian’s men appeared at both doors.
Gabriel’s hand moved near his jacket.
Claire held up a hand.
“Not yet.”
She looked at Sebastian.
“You wanted the ledger.”
She set the copy on the table.
Sebastian opened it.
His eyes narrowed almost immediately.
“This is a copy.”
“Yes.”
“You waste my time.”
“No.”
Claire leaned forward.
“I am buying yours.”
Outside, sirens began in the distance.
Sebastian looked toward the windows.
Charles stood abruptly.
“What did you do?”
Claire smiled at him.
“The thing you taught me to do.”
Charles stared.
“I read the contract.”
She pointed at the ledger copy.
“The last page contains a document release trigger.”
Sebastian flipped to the back.
A QR code and legal notice had been attached there.
“If I fail to cancel it every six hours, copies of the ledger, Anne’s tape, the trust, and Martha’s statement go to federal prosecutors, three newspapers, four insurers, and every major Whitmore client.”
Sebastian’s eyes became cold.
“You bluff like your mother.”
Claire shook her head.
“My mother trusted people.”
“I learned from what happened to her.”
Charles stepped toward Claire.
“You stupid girl.”
Dominic moved between them.
Then Sebastian began laughing.
Everyone looked at him.
“Excellent.”
He sat back down.
“Anne’s daughter finally grew teeth.”
Claire hated the approval in his voice.
“Play the rest.”
Sebastian considered her.
Then he pressed another button.
Anne’s voice returned.
There is one more thing Claire must know.
Charles is not the only man who signed her birth certificate papers.
Claire stopped breathing.
Charles went white.
Dominic turned slowly toward him.
The tape continued.
If I do not survive, the truth about Claire’s father is in the sealed adoption file.
The recording ended.
Claire stared at Charles.
“What adoption file?”
Charles said nothing.
Sebastian smiled.

And for the first time, Claire realized her father’s ugliest secret might not be that he had hidden his daughter.
It might be that she had never been his daughter at all.
