Chapter 5 - WHAT MARTHA SAW

The hospital hallway smelled of bleach and burnt coffee.

Claire arrived with Dominic and Emily through a private entrance.

Gabriel met them near the elevators.

“Charles is on the fourth floor.”

“Why hasn’t security removed him?” Claire asked.

“Because he told them he is Martha’s employer and emergency contact.”

“He isn’t family.”

“He is influential.”

Dominic’s mouth hardened.

“Not for much longer.”

They reached Martha’s room and found Charles outside speaking to a doctor.

He turned when he saw Claire.

For one second, naked fury crossed his face.

Then the performance returned.

“Thank God you’re safe.”

Claire almost admired the speed of the lie.

Charles moved toward her.

She stepped back.

“Don’t touch me.”

Emily flinched.

Charles looked at his youngest daughter.

“You should be home.”

“No.”

The word surprised everyone, including Emily.

Charles’s eyes narrowed.

“Go downstairs.”

Emily’s hands shook, but she stayed beside Claire.

“No.”

Dominic looked almost pleased.

Charles ignored him.

“Claire, Martha was confused last night.”

“Was she confused when someone dumped her near Pier Nine?”

Charles’s face did not move.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“That sentence is becoming your favorite.”

The doctor stepped between them.

“Ms. Doyle is conscious, but she needs calm.”

Claire entered alone.

Martha looked smaller than Claire had ever seen her.

A bruise darkened one temple.

Her left wrist was bandaged.

When she saw Claire, tears filled her eyes.

“You found it.”

Claire pulled a chair closer.

“The key?”

Martha nodded.

“Your mother made me promise.”

Claire stopped breathing.

“You knew?”

“I knew there was a box.”

“For fifteen years?”

Martha’s eyes closed.

“I was afraid.”

The anger came so fast Claire could barely contain it.

“Everyone was afraid while I spent fifteen years believing my mother left me nothing and my father barely tolerated me.”

Martha’s face crumpled.

“I am sorry.”

Claire wanted to be cruel.

She wanted someone else to feel the weight she had carried.

Instead, she asked the only question that mattered.

“What happened to my mother?”

Martha looked toward the door.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Anne knew Charles was stealing from her.”

Claire’s hands went cold.

“She planned to leave him.”

“When?”

“The week she died.”

Claire stared.

Martha continued.

“She had already packed documents and clothes.”

“She was taking you with her.”

Claire felt the room tilt.

“She told me we would leave after your school recital on Friday.”

Anne died Thursday night.

The official story had always been simple.

A car accident on a wet road.

No other vehicle.

No witnesses.

Martha’s fingers tightened around the blanket.

“Charles came home late that night.”

“He was wet.”

“He had blood on his cuff.”

Claire’s voice barely worked.

“Did you tell the police?”

“I tried.”

“What happened?”

“He told them he cut his hand pulling Anne from the car.”

“Did you believe him?”

“No.”

Claire swallowed.

“Why?”

Martha looked at her.

“Because he came home before the police called the house.”

The sentence landed like a blow.

Outside the room, something crashed.

Claire turned.

Martha caught her hand.

“There is more.”

Claire looked back.

“Your mother was not alone in the car.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

“A man came to the house that afternoon.”

“Who?”

“I didn’t know his name then.”

Martha’s eyes filled with fear.

“But I know it now.”

The door opened.

Dominic stepped in.

Martha looked past Claire and went white.

She whispered.

“Vale.”

Claire turned slowly toward Dominic.

He did not look confused.

That was worse.

“You knew someone from your family was with her,” Claire said.

Dominic shut the door behind him.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

He looked at Martha first, then Claire.

“My older brother, Daniel.”

Claire’s mind raced.

“Was he in the crash?”

Dominic’s silence answered.

Martha began to cry.

“His body was never reported.”

Claire stared at Dominic.

“Why?”

“Because someone removed him before police arrived.”

“Who?”

Dominic’s voice turned flat.

“My father.”

Claire stood.

“You have known all this?”

“No.”

“Stop lying to me.”

“I knew Daniel disappeared that night.”

“I knew my father spent years paying people to keep his name out of the accident report.”

“I did not know why Daniel was with Anne.”

Martha squeezed Claire’s hand.

“I do.”

Both of them looked at her.

Martha’s next words shattered the shape of Claire’s life.

“Daniel Vale was helping your mother escape Charles.”

Claire’s breath caught.

Martha shook her head quickly.

“Not because they were lovers.”

“He was helping her take evidence to federal investigators.”

Dominic’s face changed.

“What evidence?”

Martha looked at Claire.

“The black ledger.”

Claire whispered.

“It was in the bank.”

“No.”

Martha’s eyes widened.

“The ledger in the bank was the copy.”

Claire went still.

“Where is the original?”

May you like

Martha looked toward the hallway where Charles was waiting.

“Anne hid it somewhere Charles has walked past every day for fifteen years.”
