Chapter 2 - The Vance Legacy

|

Silence crashed over the parlor like a tidal wave, heavy enough to suffocate everyone standing inside it. Camille’s manicured hand fell from Damon’s tailored sleeve as the color drained completely from her heavily contoured cheeks. I held Sophie tighter against my racing heart, my legs trembling so badly I wasn’t sure I could stand even if I tried.

Four years ago, before I wore a faded gray uniform and scrubbed marble staircases for minimum wage, I was a top molecular biology student at New York University on a full academic scholarship. Damon and I had collided—literally—at an autumn charity symposium when I accidentally spilled sparkling water down the front of his custom tuxedo. Instead of getting angry, the notoriously guarded heir had laughed, handed me his handkerchief, and asked me to dinner.

We fell in love with a reckless, consuming intensity that made the rest of the city fade away. For six magical months, he wasn't a ruthless titan of industry to me; he was just Damon, the man who read my lab notes over burnt midnight toast and traced constellations across my bare shoulders.

Then, on a rainy Tuesday in November, his father’s limousine was ambushed on the Queensboro Bridge.

Overnight, the gentle man I loved died alongside his father. Damon inherited a sprawling empire built on blood, secrets, and ruthless power. Suddenly, his penthouse was crawling with armed bodyguards. My phone calls went unanswered for weeks, replaced by cold dismissals from his chief of security. Three weeks after the funeral, a cheap plastic test in my dorm bathroom turned my world upside down with two pink lines.

I left school, changed my last name, and vanished into the working-class neighborhoods of Queens to keep my baby far away from the lethal crossfire surrounding the Vance dynasty. Only when Sophie fell ill with pneumonia last winter and hospital bills buried me alive did I take a desperate housekeeping job through an agency—ending up right inside Damon’s newly purchased Upper East Side mansion.

"You're being ridiculous, Damon," Camille stammered, forcing a brittle laugh that echoed awkwardly off the high ceilings. "Half the kids in New York have hazel eyes. This woman is a nobody from an employment agency! She’s probably been studying your portraits in the hallway trying to trap you."

Damon didn’t even blink as he stared down at me.

"She didn't come from an agency by accident, Camille," Damon murmured, each word deliberate and sharp as a scalpel. "I bought that staffing company the day her resume flagged my private servers three months ago."

My breath hitched audibly.

"You knew?" I whispered, betrayal and shock tangling in my throat. "You knew it was me the entire time I was scrubbing your floors?"

"I knew the moment you walked through the service entrance with your hair dyed brown," Damon replied, stepping closer until his shadow swallowed me whole. "I was waiting to see how long you’d pretend I was a stranger. I just never knew what else you were hiding from me."
