Chapter 1 - The Cruel Push

|

Camille Kensington shoved my three-year-old daughter away from the grand piano because she believed a housekeeper’s child had no right to breathe the same air as Manhattan royalty, let alone touch polished ivory keys inside that estate. Seconds later, the most dangerous billionaire in New York walked through the double doors, caught one glimpse of my little girl’s silver-hazel eyes, and dropped his leather briefcase as if a ghost had risen from the marble floor. In that single heartbeat, every lie holding our fragile world together shattered into dust.

I froze in the hallway when I heard Sophie’s sharp cry echo through the foyer.

Dropping my tray of silver polish, I sprinted toward the sunlit parlor. My chest tightened violently at the sight waiting for me. Sophie was crumpled at the base of the Steinway piano, her tiny knuckles scraped red as she clutched her worn velvet elephant to her chest. Towering above her in four-inch designer heels, Camille smoothed down her silk skirt with far more irritation than remorse.

"She was leaving sticky fingerprints on a priceless instrument, Elena," Camille snapped, barely glancing down at my trembling toddler. "Relax. It was barely a tap. Keep your brat locked in the kitchen where she belongs."

My blood boiled, overriding every survival instinct that told me to bow my head and stay silent. I dropped to my knees, gathering Sophie into my arms while kissing her damp forehead. Sophie had only wandered in because she loved music; her innocent heart still believed beautiful melodies belonged to everyone.

Before I could fire back a reckless reply that would cost me my job, heavy footsteps stopped at the threshold.

Damon Vance stood in the doorway. The silver key ring slipped straight from his fingers, clattering loudly across the Italian tiles.

He didn’t look at the grand piano. He didn’t spare a single glance for the socialite he was scheduled to marry next month. His dark, ruthless gaze locked entirely onto my daughter’s tear-stained face.

Slowly, the man who made Wall Street executives tremble dropped to one knee beside us.

"Little one," Damon whispered, his deep voice cracking like thin ice. "Look at me."

Sophie lifted her chin, her long lashes wet with tears, revealing eyes that were an exact mirror of his own—stormy silver rimmed with rings of emerald green. Every ounce of cold composure vanished from Damon’s sharp features. He turned his head slowly, his gaze burning into mine with terrifying intensity.

"How old is she, Elena?" he asked softly.

The question stole the oxygen straight from my lungs.

"Damon, why on earth are you speaking to the help like that?" Camille scoffed, stepping forward to touch his shoulder.

He rose to his full height so deliberately that the entire room seemed to freeze around him.

"Because those are Vance eyes," Damon said, his voice deadly quiet. "And I know the exact night her mother vanished from my bed."
