Chapter 2 - The Video They Thought Would Silence Her

Emily couldn't stop shaking.
A female campus safety officer named Angela Reed arrived first.
She immediately guided the three male students away from the restroom entrance while another officer remained with them in the hallway.
Professor Anderson stood a respectful distance from Emily.
"Officer Reed is here," he said gently. "Would you prefer to speak with her?"
Emily nodded.
The professor stepped outside.
Officer Reed crouched several feet away.
"Emily, my name is Angela. I want you to know you haven't done anything wrong."
Emily pressed both hands against her skirt.
Her throat hurt from crying.
"Are they still here?"
"They're being kept away from you."
"Please don't let them come back."
"We'll arrange a safe place for you to wait while we address what happened."
Emily stared at the floor.
Then she whispered, "They filmed me."
Angela nodded.
"I understand. We'll document that and work with the appropriate offices to address the recording."
Emily started crying again.
"What if they show everybody?"
Angela didn't offer a false promise.
"We're going to take that concern seriously. We'll explain the available reporting options and help you get support."
She offered Emily a clean tissue.
Emily accepted it with trembling fingers.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Then Angela asked whether Emily wanted medical attention or someone she trusted to come sit with her.
Emily thought of her mother.
Margaret was probably cleaning hospital rooms right now.
She had already worked fourteen hours the previous day.
Emily couldn't bear the thought of telling her.
"Can I call my roommate?"
"Of course."
Her roommate, Sophie Miller, arrived twelve minutes later.
Sophie was twenty-one, studying journalism, and possessed enough energy for three people.
She usually wore bright sneakers, drank terrible coffee, and talked faster than anyone Emily had ever met.
But when she entered the private waiting room and saw Emily's tear-streaked face, she stopped smiling.
"Oh, Em."
Emily stood.
Sophie opened her arms.
Emily fell into them.
For almost a minute, she couldn't speak.
Then she whispered, "They did it again."
Sophie closed her eyes.
"Brandon?"
Emily nodded.
"Kyle and Tyler, too."
Sophie held her tighter.
"I wish you'd told me it was getting worse."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't apologize."
Emily pulled away.
"They took me into the men's bathroom."
Sophie went pale.
Emily explained what happened in short, broken sentences.
The skirt.
The kiss.
The recording.
The professor.
By the time she finished, Sophie was crying too.
"I knew they were bothering you. I didn't know they were doing this."
"I was scared."
"I know."
Sophie took her hands.
"You don't have to handle this alone anymore."
The university's student safety coordinator arrived that afternoon.
Her name was Dr. Rebecca Lawson.
She explained that Emily could receive supportive measures, including academic accommodations, adjustments to campus access, and assistance with a formal university complaint.
Emily sat beside Sophie while Dr. Lawson spoke.
"Will they be expelled?" Emily asked.
"I can't promise an outcome before an investigation. But we can address immediate safety concerns while the process moves forward."
Emily looked down.
"Brandon's father built the athletic center."
Dr. Lawson paused.
"I'm aware his family has supported the university."
"So he'll be fine."
"His father's donations don't determine whether your report will be investigated."
Emily wanted to believe her.
She wasn't ready.
Dr. Lawson asked about previous incidents.
Emily hesitated.
Then Sophie reached into her backpack.
"I have something."
She took out her laptop.
"Emily showed me some messages last month. I saved screenshots because I was worried."
She opened a folder.
There were photographs of threatening messages.
A screenshot of the notebook Brandon had thrown away.
Another showed him standing outside Emily's dormitory building.
Emily stared at the screen.
"You saved all that?"
Sophie nodded.
"I didn't know what else to do."
Dr. Lawson asked them to preserve the originals and explained how the university would securely receive the information.
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
For six weeks, she had thought the harassment existed only in her memory.
Now the evidence was sitting on a screen.
By evening, the three boys had been separated from Emily, and temporary restrictions had been imposed while the university reviewed the incident.
Professor Anderson submitted a detailed written account of what he'd witnessed.
He described each student's position.
The phone.
Emily's distress.
The unwanted contact.
The way the boys responded when he entered.
He didn't exaggerate.
He didn't guess what had happened before he opened the door.
He documented exactly what he saw.
Then he received a call from the dean's office.
"Daniel, we need to discuss the incident."
Professor Anderson closed his office door.
"Of course."
Dean William Pierce sounded exhausted.
"I'm hearing conflicting accounts."
"What accounts?"
"The students claim it was a misunderstanding."
Professor Anderson stared at the wall.
"I witnessed one student recording Emily while another touched her clothing and Brandon kissed her without her consent."
"Brandon says they were fooling around."
"Emily was crying and asking them to stop."
The dean went quiet.
Then he said, "Richard Hayes has contacted the president's office."
Professor Anderson removed his glasses.
"About his son?"
"He's concerned the university is overreacting."
"I saw what happened, William."
"I understand."
"Then we should be discussing Emily's safety, not Mr. Hayes's concerns."
The dean sighed.
"Just make sure your written statement is precise."
"It is."
After hanging up, Professor Anderson looked at the photographs on his office wall.
His students.
Competition winners.
Graduation ceremonies.
Young people smiling with their entire futures ahead of them.
He wondered how many others had sat in his classroom afraid to speak.
At 8:43 p.m., Emily's phone began vibrating.
Once.
Twice.
Then so many times that Sophie picked it up from the desk.
"What is happening?"
Emily was sitting on her bed in borrowed sweatpants.
She looked up.
Sophie opened one message.
Her expression changed.
"Oh, no."
Emily stood.
"What?"
Sophie immediately turned the screen away.
"Em, I don't think you should look at this alone."
Emily's stomach dropped.
"Is it the video?"
Sophie didn't answer.
Emily took the phone.
A link had appeared in a student group chat.
Someone had uploaded a clip from the restroom.
It was short.
It didn't show the entire incident.
But it showed enough.
Emily's terrified face.
The boys laughing.
Her voice begging them to stop.
Underneath, an anonymous account had written:
WESTBRIDGE'S LITTLE PRINCESS FINALLY GETS SOME ATTENTION.
Emily felt the room spin.
Then she saw the view count.
Four hundred.
Five hundred.
Six hundred.
She dropped the phone.
"No."
Sophie grabbed her own phone.
"I'm reporting it."
Emily backed toward the wall.
"No, no, no..."
Sophie looked up.
"Emily?"
"Everybody's going to see."
Her voice broke.
"Everybody."
Across campus, Tyler Brooks sat in his dormitory staring at the same video.
He hadn't uploaded it publicly himself.
He'd sent it to Brandon's friend Mason.
Then Mason had forwarded it.
And now it was spreading.
Brandon called him.
"What the hell did you do?"
Tyler swallowed.
"I didn't post it!"
"You recorded it!"
"You told me to!"
Brandon went silent.
Then he said, "Delete everything."
Tyler stared at the phone.
"People already have it."
"Then fix it!"
The call ended.
Tyler sat on his bed, breathing hard.
For the first time, he seemed to understand that what he'd treated like entertainment had consequences he couldn't control.
At 9:17, Emily received a new message.
It came from an unknown number.
There was no greeting.
Just a photograph.
A photograph of her mother's hospital employee badge.
Underneath were four words.
Tell Mommy what happened.
Emily stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
Drop the complaint tomorrow.
And suddenly, the nightmare wasn't confined to campus anymore.

Someone knew where her mother worked.
Someone was threatening the one person Emily loved most.
