Chapter 1 - The Door That Opened at the Wrong Time

"Lift her skirt. I'll record it."
Those seven words were the last thing Emily Carter heard before someone shoved her against the cold bathroom wall.
She was twenty-one years old, a scholarship student at Westbridge University in Ohio, and she had never been more frightened in her life.
Three young men stood around her.
Brandon Hayes blocked the door.
Kyle Mercer held her wrist.
And Tyler Brooks raised his cellphone, smiling as the red recording light appeared.
"Please," Emily whispered. "I just want to go back to class."
Brandon laughed.
"Then stop acting like you're better than us."
"I'm not."
"Look at the camera, sweetheart."
Emily turned her face away.
Kyle suddenly grabbed the outside hem of her navy skirt and jerked it upward.
She immediately forced it back down with both hands, struggling to protect herself.
"Stop!"
Brandon leaned forward and planted an unwanted kiss on her cheek.
Tyler laughed behind his phone.
Emily began crying.
"Please... don't."
Nobody listened.
Then the bathroom door opened.
A deep voice cut through the room.
"What the hell is going on here?"
All three boys froze.
Standing in the doorway was Professor Daniel Anderson.
And he had seen everything.
Forty minutes earlier, Emily had been sitting in the university library, carefully repairing the torn strap of her backpack with a little sewing kit her mother had given her.
She was the kind of girl people noticed but rarely truly knew.
Beautiful, with long chestnut-brown hair, clear blue eyes, and delicate features, she attracted attention wherever she went. But Emily had never been comfortable being watched.
She wore simple clothes, spoke softly, and usually sat near the back of every classroom.
Her father had died when she was sixteen.
Her mother, Margaret Carter, worked double shifts as a hospital housekeeper to help cover expenses that Emily's scholarship didn't pay.
Every morning, Margaret called her daughter before leaving for work.
"Eat something, sweetheart."
"I will, Mom."
"And don't study until you make yourself sick."
Emily always smiled.
"That's supposed to be my line."
She had worked hard to get into Westbridge.
She wanted to become an architect.
Not because she dreamed of designing expensive skyscrapers, but because she wanted to build affordable homes for families like hers.
Someday, she hoped to buy her mother a little house with a front porch.
A house where Margaret would never have to worry about rent again.
But over the previous six weeks, university life had turned into something Emily dreaded.
It started with Brandon Hayes.
Brandon was twenty-two, wealthy, popular, and captain of the university's intramural basketball team.
His father, Richard Hayes, owned a construction company that had funded several campus projects.
Everyone knew the name.
The university's new athletic center even carried it.
At first, Brandon approached Emily after an architecture lecture.
"Hey, beautiful. Want to grab a drink?"
She smiled politely.
"No, thank you."
He laughed.
"Come on. One drink."
"I have to work."
"Then tomorrow."
"I'm sorry. I'm not interested."
She thought that would be the end of it.
It wasn't.
Brandon began waiting outside her classes.
Kyle and Tyler soon joined him.
They followed her across the quad, made comments about her appearance, and blocked her path whenever she tried to avoid them.
One afternoon, Brandon took her notebook and held it above his head.
"Say please."
Emily reached for it.
"Please give it back."
"Give me a kiss first."
She walked away without the notebook.
An hour later, she found it in a trash can.
Several pages of her architecture project had been torn out.
Another time, Kyle photographed her without permission while she was eating alone.
He posted the picture in a private student group with a caption mocking her for rejecting Brandon.
Emily learned about it when a classmate sent her a screenshot.
She cried in her dorm room that night.
But she didn't report them.
Brandon's father was a major donor.
Kyle's older brother was friends with a campus administrator.
And Tyler seemed to know everybody.
Emily had heard stories about students who complained about powerful classmates and ended up becoming the subject of rumors themselves.
She didn't know whether those stories were true.
But she couldn't afford to lose her scholarship.
So she remained silent.
She changed her walking routes.
She avoided the cafeteria.
She stopped attending evening study sessions.
She even began leaving lectures before the professor finished speaking.
Her grades started slipping.
Professor Anderson noticed.
That morning, he stopped her after class.
"Emily, could you stay for a moment?"
She froze.
"Did I do something wrong?"
He frowned.
"No. Why would you think that?"
She stared at the floor.
"I don't know."
Professor Anderson was forty-eight, with short graying hair, a calm voice, and a reputation for being demanding but fair.
He taught architectural design and supervised the university's annual student competition.
Emily had been his strongest student at the beginning of the semester.
Now she barely spoke.
He placed her latest assignment on the desk.
"Your design is excellent. But you missed the presentation."
"I'm sorry, Professor."
"You've missed three classes this month."
"I know."
"Is something happening that's making it difficult for you to attend?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
For one desperate second, she almost told him everything.
Brandon.
Kyle.
Tyler.
The photographs.
The threats.
But then she remembered Brandon's words from the previous afternoon.
You complain about me, sweetheart, and you'll wish you'd kept your mouth shut.
Emily forced a smile.
"I'm just tired."
Professor Anderson studied her face.
He could see she was distressed, but he couldn't know why.
"All right. I won't pressure you to explain. But if something is interfering with your safety or education, there are people here who can help. I can connect you with them."
She nodded.
"Thank you."
Then she hurried out.
He watched her leave, troubled.
He had no idea that less than an hour later, he would walk into the worst moment of her life.
The attack happened during the midday break.
Emily was crossing the corridor near the engineering building when Brandon stepped in front of her.
"Hey, princess."
She stopped.
"Please move."
Kyle appeared beside her.
"What's the rush?"
"I have class."
"Relax. We just want to talk."
She tried to step around them.
Tyler moved behind her.
Suddenly, Kyle caught her arm.
"Come on."
Her books fell to the floor.
"Let go!"
Students were passing at the far end of the hallway, but the three boys positioned themselves around her, moving her toward the nearby men's restroom.
Emily stumbled.
Brandon pushed open the door.
Kyle forced her inside.
The door swung shut.
"Please!" she cried.
Nobody came.
Then Tyler took out his phone.
And the nightmare began.
Now Professor Anderson stood in the doorway.
For one second, he couldn't believe what he was seeing.
Emily was pressed against the wall, crying and holding down her skirt.
Kyle still had a hand near her arm.
Brandon stood inches from her.
Tyler held a phone pointed directly at her.
The professor's expression hardened.
"Step away from her. Now."
Brandon released a nervous laugh.
"Professor, it's just a joke."
"Move."
His voice was so sharp that Brandon immediately stepped backward.
Professor Anderson pointed toward the doorway.
"All three of you. Away from her."
Kyle released Emily's wrist.
Tyler lowered his phone.
Emily sank against the wall, struggling to breathe.
Professor Anderson kept himself between her and the students.
"Emily, are you hurt?"
She shook her head, then nodded, unable to find words.
"You're safe from them right now. I'm going to get help."
He called campus safety and requested immediate assistance.
Brandon's face changed.
"Professor, you don't need to do that."
Professor Anderson looked directly at him.
"I saw what happened."
Tyler quickly lowered his hand toward his phone.
Professor Anderson noticed.
"Do not delete or alter anything. The authorities will need to address that recording."
Brandon swallowed.
Then he said something that made the professor's blood run cold.
"Do you have any idea who my father is?"
Professor Anderson didn't move.
"Yes, Mr. Hayes."
Brandon gave a relieved little smile.
Then the professor continued.
"And that's not going to change what I just witnessed."
Emily began crying harder.
For the first time in six weeks, somebody had seen what was happening.
And he wasn't looking away.
But as campus safety hurried down the corridor, Tyler glanced at his phone.
The recording had already been sent to someone.
