Chapter 2 - THE FOOTAGE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING|

The security room was buried beneath the estate's west wing, behind two locked doors and a corridor most household employees were forbidden to enter.
Maya had cleaned the corridor twice.
She had never been allowed beyond the second door.
Now she sat at the end of a long table while James stood behind the security chief's chair. Lawrence Fenn occupied the opposite side, flanked by two guards. His confidence had returned, but it looked forced.
"This is absurd," Fenn said. "We have a missing necklace, a suspicious employee, and a woman inventing stories about surveillance devices."
James didn't look at him.
"Play the footage."
Cross opened the first recording.
At 11:17 p.m., the private gallery appeared on the screen. A housekeeper entered carrying a folded cloth. She dusted the display cabinets, checked the alarm panel, and left.
At 11:32, Lawrence Fenn entered.
He walked directly toward the sapphire necklace.
Maya leaned forward.
"Pause it."
Cross froze the image.
Fenn stood beside the display case with one hand inside his jacket.
"Continue," James ordered.
The recording resumed.
Fenn opened the case using a key from his pocket. He removed the necklace, examined it, then carried it out of frame.
No one spoke.
Fenn's face had lost its color.
"That's an edited recording," he said quickly.
Cross opened another window.
"This is the backup camera. Different server. Same timestamp."
The second recording showed the same sequence from a different angle.
James turned slowly toward Fenn.
"Would you like to explain?"
Fenn swallowed.
"I was checking the security of the display."
"By removing the necklace?"
"The case alarm was malfunctioning."
"Then why didn't you report it?"
Fenn looked toward the guards.
"I was going to."
James's voice remained level.
"When?"
Fenn said nothing.
Cross opened the service corridor footage.
At 11:51, Maya's cleaning cart appeared beside the linen room. She was nowhere in sight. Four minutes later, Fenn walked into the corridor, looked both ways, and stopped beside the cart.
He lifted a folded chamois cloth.
The sapphire necklace disappeared beneath it.
Maya felt her stomach tighten.
She had suspected the cart had been used against her. Seeing the act recorded so clearly was different.
For two years, she had watched people dismiss evidence because it contradicted a powerful person's version of events.
Now the evidence was speaking for itself.
James leaned closer to the screen.
"Why frame her?"
Fenn shook his head.
"I didn't frame anyone."
Cross played the next clip.
At 12:04, Fenn entered the private study. He stood beside the eastern wall and pressed something into the ornamental molding. When he stepped away, a small section of the trim looked slightly different.
Cross enlarged the image.
"The device recovered from the study matches the object visible in Fenn's hand."
Fenn pushed back his chair.
"This is a setup."
James finally looked directly at him.
"Sit down."
"I've served this family for eleven years!"
"And tonight you planted stolen property on an employee and installed an unauthorized listening device in my study."
"I was protecting you."
"From whom?"
Fenn's mouth tightened.
The silence lasted several seconds.
Then he said, "You don't understand what is happening outside this house."
James's expression did not change.
"Then explain it."
Fenn looked at Maya.
"She knows more than she's telling you."
Maya answered before James could.
"Yes. I do."
James turned toward her.
"Start talking."
Maya placed both hands on the table.
"At Halloran Whitmore, I discovered payments routed through a chain of shell companies. The money came from legitimate investment funds and ended up in accounts controlled by people connected to organized crime."
"Whose accounts?" James asked.
"Some belonged to companies associated with your business partners."
"Associated isn't the same as controlled."
"I know. That's why I spent months verifying the transfers."
She removed a folded sheet from her pocket.
"This is a transaction reference, not the full ledger. The original records disappeared after I reported the irregularities. But I memorized several account identifiers before my access was revoked."
James examined the paper.
One identifier made Cross's expression change.
He recognized it.
James noticed.
"What is it?"
Cross hesitated.
"A holding company connected to Daniel Voss."
The room became still.
Daniel Voss was a respected financier who had helped James expand his legitimate businesses. He had attended family dinners, donated to hospitals, and appeared beside politicians at charity events.
James slowly looked back at Maya.
"You're telling me one of my closest financial partners is stealing from me?"
"I'm telling you that the records point toward him. I need access to the original transactions to prove it."
James closed the folder.
"Then we'll find them."
Fenn stared at him.
"You can't be serious."
James stood.
"Lawrence, you're suspended effective immediately. Cross will preserve every device and record you accessed. You will remain available to investigators."
Fenn rose angrily.
"You'll regret trusting a maid over your own people."
James's reply was immediate.
"I didn't trust her. I trusted the footage."
May you like
He looked at Maya.
"That's more than I can say for you."
