Chapter 16 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO DISAPPEAR AGAIN|

The investigators located Adrian Cole's current residence through a combination of public records, witness statements, and lawful financial inquiries.

He lived in a coastal town in Maine under the name Andrew Cole. The property was modest, the neighbors knew little about him, and no evidence suggested he was preparing to flee.

The authorities arranged an interview.

James wanted to attend, but the investigators advised him to remain outside the formal questioning because of his business connection to the case.

Maya agreed to accompany her attorney as a witness to the financial analysis.

They arrived on a cold morning, the sea wind cutting through their coats.

Adrian Cole looked older than his photographs. He opened the door, saw Maya, and went completely still.

"You," he said.

Maya held his gaze.

"Me."

He glanced toward the investigator.

"I don't know what this is about."

The investigator presented identification and explained the purpose of the interview.

Adrian reluctantly allowed them inside.

The living room contained little furniture. A single framed photograph sat on the mantel, turned slightly away from the room.

Maya noticed it but did not touch it.

The investigator placed copies of the Blackbridge records on the table.

"Mr. Cole, these documents indicate that you designed the original investment structure. They also show that funds were transferred through entities associated with your former business partners."

Adrian examined the papers.

"I provided consulting services. I wasn't responsible for how the clients used the structure."

Maya opened her folder.

"Then perhaps you can explain why the same account identifiers appeared in the Halloran Whitmore audit and the Kang estate records."

He looked at her.

"I don't know."

"Why did you instruct Margaret Lin to sign a reconciliation report that did not reflect the actual transfers?"

His expression tightened.

"I never instructed her to do anything improper."

"Then why was the final report removed from the archive?"

Adrian pushed the papers away.

"You don't understand the situation."

Maya's voice remained calm.

"Then explain it."

For several seconds, he stared at her.

Finally, he spoke.

"Blackbridge was designed to protect businesses from predatory acquisitions. The structure allowed funds to move temporarily while assets were stabilized. It was legal when it began."

"What changed?" the investigator asked.

"Daniel Voss wanted faster returns. He began moving money through entities I didn't control. When I objected, he said the transfers were temporary."

"Did you report them?"

"No."

"Why not?"

Adrian looked down.

"Because I had signed the original agreements. If the project failed, my name would be attached to everything. I convinced myself I could repair it before anyone noticed."

Maya felt anger rise.

"You let people take the blame while you protected yourself."

"I didn't know they would destroy your career."

"You knew the records were false."

Adrian did not answer.

The investigator continued questioning him about the missing money, the altered approvals, and the documents removed from the archive.

Adrian denied ordering the break-in at the Kang estate. He denied directing Fenn to frame Maya. Those claims remained under investigation, and the authorities made no promise about the outcome.

But he acknowledged that Daniel Voss had continued using the Blackbridge structure after the project was supposed to have ended.

He also admitted that he had supplied Voss with information about Maya's original audit.

"Why?" Maya asked.

Adrian looked at her with a mixture of shame and defensiveness.

"Voss said you were going to expose everyone. He told me that if the investigation continued, people who had nothing to do with the fraud would lose their livelihoods."

"So you helped him make me look like a criminal."

"I thought the situation could be contained."

Maya stood.

"That's what you called it. Containment. You contained the truth by destroying the person who found it."

Adrian lowered his eyes.

"I am sorry."

She felt nothing like relief.

"You don't get to decide when my suffering is over."

The interview continued for another hour. Adrian agreed to provide records and identify the accounts he had controlled. His cooperation would be evaluated by the authorities.

Outside, Maya stood near the road and watched the gray ocean.

James called.

"How did it go?"

"He admitted he knew the structure had been misused. He claims Voss took control of the transfers."

"Do you believe him?"

"I believe he knows more than he has told us."

James was quiet.

"What will you do now?"

May you like

Maya looked toward the house.

"For the first time in two years, I won't have to prove that I deserve to be heard. I'll let the evidence speak."
