THE WHISPER OF THE TIDE / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - Breaking the SilenceThe next three days on Shelter Island were a blur of intense passion, shared secrets, and quiet healing.

In the seclusion of the cabin, away from the lies of her high-society life and the solitary walls I had built around myself, we found something real. We cooked together, walked the rocky beaches under the gray northern sky, and spent long nights wrapped in blankets before the fireplace, learning every detail of each other's lives.

I learned that under her wealthy exterior, Clare was a brilliant strategist who had secretly earned a master's degree in corporate law. She learned that I wasn't just a mechanic; I had been a chief engineer in the Navy before leaving to seek a quiet life away from bureaucracy.

On the fourth morning, Mateo—my trusted friend and private investigator back in Newport—contacted me via a secure satellite phone I kept in the boat's emergency kit.

"Owen," Mateo's voice crackled over the line. "Graham has gone nuclear. He's filed an emergency petition with the state court claiming Clare has been kidnapped by a disgruntled dock worker—namely, you."

Clare, who was sitting beside me on the boat's engine hatch, gasped.

"He's using the police to hunt you down," Mateo continued. "He scheduled the final board vote for tomorrow evening at eight o'clock at the Newport Harbor Club. If Clare isn't there to vote against the merger, her uncle will exercise her proxy power and sign the company over."

Clare took the phone from my hand, her voice icy, clear, and commanding. "Mateo. This is Clare. Do you still have connections with the District Attorney's office?"

"I do, Miss Bowmont," Mateo answered.

"Good," she said, her eyes flashing with a ruthless determination I had never seen before. "I have the Panama bank accounts and the poison toxicology report on a flash drive. I need you to set up a meeting with the DA and federal prosecutors tomorrow night at seven."

She handed the phone back to me and looked into my eyes. "It's time to stop running, Owen. We're going to crash his party."
