Chapter 6 - Whispers in the DarkThat night, we lit a fire in the hearth.

The flames cast long, warm shadows across the wooden walls of the cabin as the wind howled outside. We sat on the woven rug in front of the fireplace, sharing a simple meal of canned soup and warm bread.
For the first time, Clare spoke about her life before the tragedy. She talked about her father, a self-made shipping magnate who had taught her how to navigate by the stars when she was ten years old. She talked about the creeping realization that Graham, her father's trusted protégé, was systematically poisoning her father's mind and body to seize control of the company.
"I tried to stop him," she said softly, her eyes reflecting the orange glow of the fire. "But Graham is a master of manipulation. He made everyone believe my father was losing his memory to dementia. By the time I found the medical records, my father was gone."
"And now he wants you out of the way," I said, my jaw tightening.
"He wants my signature," she corrected. "Without my 40 percent share, he can't complete the sale of Bowmont Logistics to a foreign syndicate. Once he gets it... I become an unfortunate accident."
She looked up at me, her gray eyes filled with a terrifying vulnerability. "I was so tired, Owen. When I was in that water, for a second... I thought about stopping. I thought about just letting the current take me."
"Don't say that," I said, my voice sharper than intended. I moved closer, grasping her hands tightly in mine. "Don't ever say that. You fought that water, Clare. I saw your eyes. You were furious."
She looked at our joined hands, then up at my face. "Because I saw you," she whispered. "I saw a man swimming toward me who looked like he cared whether I lived or died."
She leaned forward, resting her forehead gently against mine. The scent of salt and pine filled the air between us.

"Owen..." she breathed.
I didn't let her finish. I pulled her close, my lips finding hers in a deep, desperate kiss that shattered the last remaining walls between us.
