THE WHISPER OF THE OCEAN / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - The Shadow over Room 412I walked down the quiet corridor toward Room 412, my footsteps heavy against the linoleum tile. My hands trembled as I reached out to grab the stainless steel door handle.

I pushed the door open softly.

The room was dimly lit by a single bedside lamp. Sarah lay in the narrow hospital bed, surrounded by heart monitors, IV bags, and oxygen tubes. Her face was pale, almost translucent, her delicate dark curls spread across the white pillow. She looked so small, so fragile, yet as I looked at her, the deep love I had tried to bury for three years flooded back with overwhelming force.

When the door clicked shut, her eyelids fluttered open. She turned her head slowly, her dark eyes widening in shock when she saw me standing there.

"Charles...?" she whispered, her voice weak and raspy. "How... why are you here?"

I walked over to the bed, dropping to my knees beside her mattress, taking her cold, thin hand into both of my palms, pressing it against my cheek.

"Because you listed me as your emergency contact, Sarah," I choked out, tears streaming down my face. "Because you're pregnant with my baby. And because you lied to me for four years."

Sarah froze, tears instantly overflowing her eyes and trailing down her pale temples. She pulled her hand back slightly, but I held on firmly, refusing to let go.

"I'm sorry..." she sobbed softly, turning her face away toward the window. "I'm so sorry, Charles. I didn't want you to find out like this. You weren't supposed to know."

"Why, Sarah? Why did you carry this nightmare alone?" I begged, my voice breaking. "We were married! We promised for better or worse, in sickness and in health! You cut me out of the most important fight of your life!"

"Because you were drowning, Charles!" Sarah cried out, her voice rising with sudden, intense emotion as she turned back to look at me. "Four years ago, your company was failing! You were taking out personal loans, working until you collapsed! If I had told you that I had a blood disorder, you would have sold your business, ruined your future, and spent every penny on my medical bills!"

"I would have sold everything ten times over if it meant keeping you safe!" I roared softly, squeezing her hand tight. "You thought you were protecting me, but all you did was break my heart in slow motion!"

Sarah wept quietly, her chest heaving against the hospital gown. "When we met in Miami last month... I just wanted one night, Charles. One normal, perfect night where I wasn't a patient, where I wasn't sick, where I was just your wife again. I never imagined... I never dreamed I would get pregnant."

I leaned over the bed, pressing my forehead gently against hers, smelling the soft lavender scent that still lingered in her hair.

"We have a baby now, Sarah," I whispered, holding her face in my hands. "Our baby. And I am not letting you go again. Do you hear me? We are fighting this together."

She looked into my eyes, seeing the unshakeable determination in my soul, and for the first time in four years, she slowly, softly nodded.
