Chapter 18 - The King’s Return|

BANG!
The heavy mahogany door exploded inward, splintering into pieces as two Moretti enforcers kicked through the frame, their weapons raised.
I didn't hesitate.
I squeezed the trigger.
BANG! BANG!
The recoil drove my wrists back, the deafening noise echoing inside the stone room like a grenade.
The lead enforcer gasped, clutching his shoulder as he fell backward into the hallway, his blood spraying across the doorframe.
"She’s armed!" the second man yelled, ducking behind the wall. "Shoot her legs!"
Before he could step into the frame, a dark shadow rose behind him in the corridor.
A heavy hand grabbed the enforcer’s neck from behind, twisting it with a sickening CRACK. The man dropped like a stone.
Dmitri Vulov stepped through the ruined doorway.
He wore his dark coat, his face covered in rain and blood, his gray eyes burning with an unhinged, murderous rage that looked entirely demon-like.
Behind him, Anton and three Vulov soldiers were clearing the hallway, firing point-blank into the remaining intruders.
Dmitri dropped his smoking weapon to his side, his eyes locking onto me where I crouched behind the leather sofa, holding his silver pistol with trembling hands.
"Elena," he gasped out, his chest heaving as if he had run ten miles.
I dropped the gun onto the sofa, my legs completely giving out beneath me as I fell onto the rug, sobbing hysterically.

Dmitri crossed the room in three massive strides, dropping to his knees beside me, wrapping his heavy arms around my body, pulling me fiercely against his chest.
"I'm here," he growled into my hair, his chest shaking with violent relief. "I'm here, my love. You're safe."
