Chapter 15 - The Morning After|

I woke up at sunrise with my head resting against Dimitri's bare, scarred chest.

His heavy arm was wrapped securely around my waist, pinning me against his side, his thumb tracing slow, rhythmic circles against my bare hip even in his sleep.

The morning light painted the room in soft shades of gold and amber.

I lay there for a long time, listening to the deep, steady beat of his heart beneath my ear.

He looked different when he was asleep. The lethal, icy authority he carried like a weapon was softened, revealing the handsome, tired thirty-four-year-old man beneath the mafia king.

I reached out with a light finger, tracing the pale white scar running along his left collarbone.

Dmitri’s gray eyes opened instantly.

He didn't startle. He didn't jump. He simply looked down at me, his eyes clearing in a fraction of a second, a soft, rare warmth entering his storm-gray irises.

"Good morning," he murmured, his voice raspy with sleep.

"Good morning," I whispered, my cheeks flushing warm.

Dmitri leaned down, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against my forehead, his hand sliding up my back to pull me closer against his chest.

"I have to leave for the docks at eight," he said softly into my hair. "Julian Moretti’s captains are calling for a meeting."

A cold spike of fear shot through my stomach.

"Is it dangerous?" I asked, looking up into his face.

Dmitri offered a small, dark smile, his thumb caressing my lower lip.

"Everything in my world is dangerous, Elena," he said softly. "But today... I have something very precious to come home to."
