Chapter 3 - THE ROBBERY THAT CHANGED EVERYTHINGThe first warning came at eleven twenty.

A delivery driver refused to enter the diner.

He left three boxes beside the back entrance, glanced toward the street, and drove away without requesting a signature.

Maya noticed him watching the windows.

She mentioned it to Ellen.

"Probably another delivery mistake."

But Ellen didn't sound convinced.

Daniel had remained in the diner for nearly two hours. He had asked questions about Margaret, examined the old basement, and made several calls outside.

His presence was beginning to attract attention.

Maya finally approached him.

"Are you planning to stay all day?"

"Would that bother you?"

"You're making my customers nervous."

He glanced at a businessman who had been staring at his security team.

"Fair enough."

Daniel instructed his men to wait outside.

For the first time, the diner felt normal again.

Then the front door opened.

Two men entered wearing baseball caps and dark jackets. One carried a paper bag. The other kept his right hand inside his coat.

"Everybody stay where they are!"

The diner fell silent.

Maya looked toward the counter.

Ellen was standing beside the coffee machine.

A customer dropped his fork.

The man near the entrance pulled out a gun.

"Phones on the table! Wallets! Nobody gets hurt if you cooperate!"

Maya felt her heartbeat quicken.

Daniel stood slowly.

The second robber pointed the weapon toward him.

"Sit down!"

Daniel obeyed.

But his eyes remained fixed on the gunman's hands.

Maya noticed something unusual.

The first man was shaking.

His weapon was pointed too high, and his breathing was uneven.

The second robber seemed calmer, but kept looking toward the back door.

Maya understood something.

They weren't simply looking for money.

They were waiting for someone.

"Miss, the register!" the first man shouted.

Maya opened it.

"Take whatever you need."

"All of it!"

She stepped away.

The second man moved toward the customers.

"Everybody down!"

An elderly woman began crying.

Maya quietly approached her.

"Mrs. Palmer, look at me."

"Please..."

"Just breathe. Keep your hands where he can see them."

The gunman turned.

"Get away from her!"

Maya immediately stopped.

"Okay."

The first robber looked toward Daniel.

"You! Get up!"

Daniel remained seated.

The man raised his gun.

"I said get up!"

Maya saw the second robber move behind him.

Something was wrong.

The second man had pulled a small object from his pocket. It wasn't a weapon.

It was a folded photograph.

He looked at Daniel, then at Maya.

"Which one is she?"

Daniel's expression changed.

Maya heard it.

The question wasn't about the money.

It was about her.

"Nobody needs to get hurt," she said carefully.

The first robber laughed.

"You think you're in charge?"

"No. I think you're scared."

His face twisted.

"Shut up!"

Maya slowly raised both hands.

"Your partner keeps checking the door. You haven't asked for the safe. And you haven't taken anybody's phone."

Daniel looked at her.

She continued.

"Someone sent you here for a reason."

The second robber stepped forward.

"That's enough."

He reached for Maya's arm.

Daniel stood.

"Take your hand off her."

The entire diner seemed to freeze.

The gunman swung toward him.

"Sit down!"

Daniel didn't move.

Then the second robber made a fatal mistake.

He said a name.

"Mr. Moretti wants the girl alive."

Daniel's eyes hardened.

"Which Moretti?"

The robber realized what he had revealed.

Maya looked between them.

Before anyone could move, a gunshot shattered the front window.

Customers screamed.

The first robber dropped his weapon.

Daniel pulled Maya behind the counter while his security team rushed through the entrance.

The second robber ran toward the kitchen.

A security officer stopped him before he reached the back door.

Within seconds, both men were restrained.

Maya was shaking.

Daniel crouched beside her.

"Are you hurt?"

She shook her head.

"Who is Mr. Moretti?"

Daniel looked toward the arrested men.

May you like

Then he answered quietly.

"The man who has been trying to find you."
