Chapter 18 - THE FINAL PIECE OF THE PUZZLEThe old chapel stood behind the Moretti estate, partly concealed by trees.

It had been closed for years after a storm damaged its roof.

Dominic remembered visiting the building as a child.

His grandfather had used it for private family ceremonies.

The structure was scheduled for demolition the following month.

Daniel contacted the property manager and requested access.

Inside, the chapel smelled of dust and damp wood.

A narrow aisle led toward a stone altar.

Maya examined the floor.

There were several engraved stones.

One carried a sentence.

FAMILY IS NOT WHAT WE INHERIT. IT IS WHAT WE PROTECT.

She knelt.

"Is this it?"

Dominic examined the inscription.

"That's my grandfather's promise."

The stone had a small metal ring embedded near the edge.

Daniel and Thomas carefully lifted it.

Beneath it was a sealed metal box.

Dominic opened it with the key found in the original family records.

Inside were several documents and a small recording device.

The first document proved that Richard had owned a controlling share of the shipping company.

The second showed that Anthony had forged the transfer papers.

The third contained Raymond's signature on the original order to destroy the building.

Daniel examined the recording device.

It still worked.

A conversation began.

Raymond's voice was unmistakable.

"Once Richard is gone, the girl will be our leverage."

Anthony answered.

"What about Dominic?"

"He'll inherit the company. You keep him distracted with family business."

"And the woman?"

"Move her somewhere nobody can find her."

The recording continued.

Then a third voice spoke.

Victor Hail.

"What happens if the girl survives?"

Raymond answered without hesitation.

"Then she becomes the final loose end."

Maya closed her eyes.

For seventeen years, people had made decisions about her life without asking what she wanted.

No more.

Dominic called the prosecutor.

The evidence was transferred to investigators under formal chain-of-custody procedures.

Within hours, arrest warrants were issued for Raymond, Victor, and Anthony.

But Raymond had disappeared from his usual locations.

Thomas received information that he was preparing to leave the country.

Daniel immediately organized a search.

Maya sat beside her father in the hospital that evening.

Richard looked tired.

"Are you frightened?"

She smiled sadly.

"I've been frightened for a long time."

He took her hand.

"Your mother and I should have protected you better."

"You did what you could."

Richard shook his head.

"I should have trusted Margaret with everything."

Maya looked at him.

"She loved me."

"More than you know."

He told her that Margaret had refused several offers of money to reveal Maya's location.

She had chosen a modest life and worked multiple jobs to keep the girl safe.

Maya cried quietly.

"I wish I could tell her thank you."

Richard squeezed her hand.

"She knew."

Later that night, Daniel visited.

He stood beside the hospital bed.

"Your father is going to recover."

Richard looked at him.

"You're Richard's boy."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes, sir."

"I remember your father. He was a good man."

Daniel swallowed.

"I wish I had more time with him."

Richard smiled faintly.

"Then don't waste the time you have now."

Daniel looked toward Maya.

For the first time, he seemed to understand that the woman who had given a stranger dinner for one dollar had changed far more than his plans.

He reached for her hand.

But before he could speak, Thomas called.

"Boss, we've found Raymond."

Daniel answered.

"Where?"

"He's at the old shipping terminal."

Thomas paused.

"He's holding someone hostage."

Maya's heart stopped.

"Who?"

May you like

Thomas's voice became quiet.

"Your aunt Ellen."
