Chapter 2 - The Federal BreachCRASH!

Glass shattered in the grand corridor. Heavy boots echoed against the marble.

A woman’s voice boomed above the organ music: “Federal agents! Step away from that door!”

The heavy lock burst inward under a hydraulic ram.

Agent Maya Sloan entered beside two paramedics, but she was not looking at me. She was staring at the half-empty cup of ginger tea sitting beside my purse—tea Evelyn had insisted I drink thirty minutes before the ceremony.

“Bag that now,” Maya instructed an officer. “Whatever started this labor prematurely is sitting in that glass.”

Paramedics lifted me onto a gurney as a contraction racked my body.

“Evelyn had draft papers prepared,” Maya said quickly, leaning over me as they rolled the gurney into the hall. “If you gave birth alone in a locked room without medical records, she was filing for immediate emergency guardianship of the child, claiming you were incapacitated and Daniel had abandoned you.”

“Where is Daniel?” I sobbed, clutching Maya’s sleeve. “Where is my husband?”

Maya looked toward the rear estate gardens. “Our team just tracked his phone signal to the historic wine cellar beneath the oak grove.”
