Chapter 1 - The Glass of TeaI begged for an ambulance when labor began at the wedding. Instead, my mother-in-law dragged me away and locked the door.

My water broke in the center of the Whitmore vineyard ballroom, spreading across the white marble beneath my shoes.
âPlease,â I gasped, gripping a chair as another contraction tore through me. âCall an ambulance.â
The string quartet stopped. Two hundred wedding guests turned toward me.
My sister-in-law Vanessa stared from the altar as if I had deliberately ruined her entrance. Before anyone could move, my mother-in-law, Evelyn Whitmore, seized my arm.
âShe is being dramatic,â Evelyn announced smoothly to the room. âThe ceremony will continue.â
I was thirty-five weeks pregnant. The contractions were less than three minutes apart.
Evelyn dragged me through a side corridor while I called for my husband, Daniel, but he was nowhere in sight. She shoved me into the womenâs restroom, took my phone from my hand, and locked the door from the outside.
âThis baby is not going to steal Vanessaâs spotlight,â she whispered through the heavy wood door. âYou will stay quiet until the vows are finished.â
I pounded on the door, but the organ music started again.
Then I remembered the emergency phone hidden inside the lining of my purse.
Special Agent Maya Sloan had given it to me three weeks earlier after I discovered that Whitmore Vineyards had moved millions of dollars from an employee medical fund into private offshore accounts. Daniel and I had agreed to testify, but that morning he vanished before our scheduled meeting with Maya.
I dialed the only saved number with shaking fingers.
âMaya,â I whispered. âIâm locked inside the west restroom. Iâm in labor, and Daniel is missing.â

Her reply was immediate and razor-sharp. âClaire, do not drink or eat anything else. We found the draft guardianship papers. They planned this.â
A violent contraction drove me to my knees. Outside, Evelyn ordered someone to turn up the music.
