“The others?” Alexander asked, his voice breaking.

Julian pressed both hands to his face. “My other eye is burning,” he whispered. “Like something is moving inside.”

Alma turned toward the base of the piano. On one of the sides, behind a wood molding and next to the wall of the music room, there was a narrow opening that no one had ever noticed. The girl knelt and peered inside.

“It didn't come here to hide,” she said very slowly. “It came to warn that they've been found.”

Alexander felt a brutal chill run up his spine. “Found what?”

Alma looked up. For the first time, she looked scared. “The thing they wanted to bury the day your son stopped seeing.”

Julian reached his hand out to her without hesitation. “Take the other one out. I trust you.”

Alma repeated the movement, even slower, and from under the left eyelid, she pulled out another tiny black device. The moment both devices were removed, Julian gasped. Light—blinding, fiery, raw light—flooded into his consciousness for the first time in twelve years!
