THE UNBROKEN BLOODLINE / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Strike at the Table“The first grandchild has to be Lauren's!”

My mother, Eleanor, shrieked, her voice tearing through the dining room like jagged metal.

“Get rid of it!”

Then she lunged straight toward me.

Only moments before, it had all seemed like a normal, albeit tense, family dinner. Three hours earlier, my sister Lauren had received the devastating news that her fourth round of IVF had been unsuccessful. As soon as I entered my parents' suburban Boston estate, I realized something was deeply wrong. Lauren had camouflaged her puffy, tear-stained eyes with a fresh layer of expensive makeup. Her husband, Eric, remained so close to her side that he seemed more like a protective barrier than a spouse. My father, Richard, kept his eyes fixed on the Sunday roast, carving the meat with extreme, methodical focus, avoiding eye contact with anyone at the table.

And my mother... she wore a smile. An overly bright, terrifyingly serene smile.

I recognized that look better than anyone. The more pleasant she appeared on the surface, the more violent the internal chaos brewing beneath her skin.

Click. Click.

Her silver fork struck the porcelain plate like the ticking of a countdown clock. Under the table, I gripped my husband Luke’s knee tightly. Don't, my eyes pleaded. Not tonight.

But Luke had held onto our wonderful secret for eleven long, hopeful weeks. He lifted his wine glass with a broad, loving grin. “Actually... we have some incredible news to share with everyone tonight.”

Time stood still. Lauren’s head snapped upward. My father’s carving knife hovered motionless in mid-air. And for the first time in my twenty-nine years of life, my mother’s expression turned perfectly, chillingly frozen.

“I'm pregnant,” I whispered.

The silence in the room was absolute.

Lauren was the first to react. She gasped, springing up from her chair and wrapping her arms around me, tears trailing down her cheeks. “Oh, Natalie...” Her voice held two deeply conflicting emotions—gut-wrenching sorrow for her own loss, and real, sisterly joy for me.

Then my mother began to rise from her seat.

“Today?” she whispered, her hands trembling against the white tablecloth. “You decided to announce this today?” Her volume surged with every syllable. “Four cycles of IVF... four heartbreak failures for your sister! After all the sacrifices we made... after all the money I've poured into her treatments... you bring this into my home?!”

She gestured sharply, maliciously, at my abdomen.

“The first grandchild must be Lauren's! It has to be her child!”

My mother rushed around the mahogany dining table with unnatural, terrifying speed. Luke began to stand up to block her path, and Eric moved to grab her arm, but they were both too slow. Because no one at that table—none of us—could process the sheer madness of what was unfolding in real time.

Eleanor clamped her left hand onto my shoulder, pinning me firmly against my chair.

And then, she swung her right fist violently into my stomach.

Low. Targeted. Exactly over my womb. Screaming at the top of her lungs: “Get rid of it!”

One brutal blow.

It drove every bit of oxygen from my lungs. Pain exploded through my core, blinding and absolute. I collapsed heavily over the arm of my chair, the wooden legs slipping from beneath me, and crashed onto my knees on the expensive oriental dining room carpet.

I clutched my stomach with both arms, gasping for breath, my vision blurring into dark spots.

Above me, the room erupted into total chaos. Luke roared in primal fury, shoving my mother back so hard she stumbled against the sideboard. My father sat paralyzed in his chair, his face drained of all color, murmuring: “Eleanor... oh God, Eleanor, what did you do?”

Lauren dropped to her knees beside me, covering her mouth in sheer horror, sobbing hysterically. “Natalie! Oh God, Natalie, I’m sorry! I’m so sorry!”

A dark, warm sensation spread rapidly beneath my beige silk dress.

I looked down at my lap. Blood—bright, dark crimson—was soaking through the silk fabric, pooling onto the cream carpet beneath my knees.

“Luke...” I choked out, tears cutting through the dust on my cheeks as darkness began to creep into the edges of my mind. “Luke... the baby...”

Suddenly, the heavy front door of the estate crashed open.

A tall, imposing man in a sharp black wool trench coat stepped into the foyer, flanked by two uniformed police officers. His dark eyes swept across the dining room—taking in my mother’s wild, panicked expression, my weeping sister, the blood pooling on the carpet, and Luke holding my limp body.

When my mother’s eyes landed on the man in the doorway, every trace of her psychotic rage vanished, replaced by an absolute, paralyzed terror. Her skin turned deathly white, and her hands began to shake uncontrollably.

It was Judge William Vance—my father’s estranged elder brother, the federal magistrate who had cut ties with our family twenty years ago following a secret my mother had spent my entire life trying to bury.

“Eleanor,” Judge Vance spoke, his deep voice echoing off the high ceilings like a thunderclap. “I see your madness has finally reached its peak.”
