THE TWINS ACROSS THE ROOM / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6 - The Woman Behind the Lie

I stood before Luca did. Motherhood had made my reflexes faster than billionaire rage. “Get the children.” I did not raise my voice. Luca understood immediately. He intercepted Celeste halfway across the sideline while I called Theo’s coach and asked him to keep Theo with the team after the game until I said otherwise. Lily was beside me, drawing in a notebook. “Who’s that?” she asked. “Someone we’re not talking to today.” “She looks mean.” “Lily.” “What? She does.” I nearly laughed despite the situation.

Celeste removed her sunglasses when Luca blocked her path. Even from twenty yards away, I could read the confrontation in their bodies. Luca stood rigid. Celeste looked composed. She had aged, but power had preserved her better than kindness ever would. Silver now threaded her black hair. Her coat probably cost more than the used Honda I drove when Luca and I first met. She pointed toward me. Luca shook his head. She attempted to step around him. He stopped her again.

Then she called loudly, “Nia.”

Several parents turned.

I walked toward them because I refused to let Celeste transform a children’s soccer field into another place where I hid.

“Leave,” I said.

Her eyes moved over me slowly.

“You look well.”

“You look trespassed.”

“Nia, I came to meet my grandchildren.”

“No.”

“They are Morettis.”

“They are children.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“I told you not to come.”

Celeste ignored him. “You have spent your whole life overreacting when a calm conversation would solve things.”

I laughed.

“You forged communication about my pregnancy.”

“I did no such thing.”

“Anton Bell says otherwise.”

“Anton is a bitter former employee bargaining to protect himself.”

“He has records,” Luca said.

Celeste’s face flickered.

Tiny.

But enough.

“You have chosen to believe strangers over your mother.”

“No. I chose evidence over you.”

That landed.

She turned toward me.

“What do you want?”

“Today? For you to leave.”

“Money?”

I laughed again.

“Of course that’s where your mind goes.”

“You disappeared for six years and reappeared with two children after Luca married into another wealthy family.”

“I didn’t reappear. He walked into my restaurant.”

“Our restaurant,” Lily called from behind me.

I turned.

She had followed.

“Lily.”

Celeste stared at her.

For the first time, something human appeared in the woman’s face.

Lily stared back without fear.

“Are you the grandma we can’t meet?”

I closed my eyes.

Luca muttered something in Italian.

Celeste crouched slightly.

“I am your grandmother.”

Lily looked at me.

“Can she say that?”

“She can say it. It doesn’t mean you have to do anything.”

Celeste flinched.

Lily considered her.

“Mom says you lied.”

Every nearby adult suddenly became fascinated by the soccer field.

Celeste stood.

“This is inappropriate.”

“You came uninvited to a six-year-old’s soccer game,” I said. “You surrendered the high ground.”

Luca stepped closer to his mother.

“You are not contacting Nia. You are not contacting the children. You are not sending gifts. You are not using staff, investigators or attorneys to approach them. If you want any relationship later, it begins with accountability.”

Celeste stared at him.

“You would keep my grandchildren from me?”

“You kept my children from me.”

Her face finally cracked.

“I protected you.”

The sentence was almost whispered.

“From what?”

Celeste’s gaze moved to me.

“From becoming your father.”

Luca froze.

That changed everything.

Domenico Moretti had died nine years earlier. Publicly, he was remembered as a visionary industrialist. Privately, Luca adored him with complications. Domenico worked constantly, traveled constantly, and rarely came home. Celeste spent decades waiting for a husband who belonged to his company more than his family.

“What does Dad have to do with Nia?” Luca asked.

Celeste’s voice became brittle.

“Your father threw away every advantage his family gave him because he married for love and then spent years resenting the responsibilities that love created.”

“You mean you.”

“I mean reality.”

“You thought Nia would make me weak.”

“I thought children would trap you before you finished becoming who you were meant to be.”

I stared.

“You knew I was pregnant.”

Celeste looked at me.

“Yes.”

The word stunned even Luca.

“You admit it?” he asked.

“I knew there was a possibility.”

“You saw the ultrasound.”

Silence.

Luca’s face changed.

“You saw it.”

Celeste looked away.

I felt sick.

“How?” I asked.

“Anton brought the letter.”

“You opened it.”

“Yes.”

“My ultrasound was inside.”

“Yes.”

I had imagined that letter traveling unopened through a corporate machine. Instead, she had held the first photograph of my children and chosen to hide it from their father.

Luca’s voice went dangerously quiet.

“You saw your grandchildren before I did.”

Celeste’s eyes filled, but Luca continued.

“You saw them before Nia had even finished her first trimester.”

“I was afraid.”

“So you made everyone else pay for your fear.”

Her composure collapsed.

“You don’t understand what this family does to people. Your father became a stranger. I spent years begging him to come home. He always chose the company. Then you married Nia and suddenly you were missing meetings, leaving dinners early, talking about children and houses in the suburbs. I watched you become him backward.”

Luca stared.

“I was happy.”

“You were distracted.”

“I was happy.”

His mother went silent.

That was the core of it.

Celeste did not trust happiness that reduced control.

Security from the sports complex approached after another parent complained. Luca asked them to escort Celeste away. Before leaving, she looked at Lily.

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

Lily frowned.

“But you did.”

Celeste stopped.

My daughter had done in five words what lawyers might spend months failing to do.

Celeste got into the Mercedes.

After the game, Theo scored once. Luca cheered too loudly. Theo loved it.

Then, on the drive home, my phone began buzzing continuously.

A gossip site had published photographs from the restaurant.

The headline read:

LUCA MORETTI’S SECRET TWINS? EX-WIFE EMERGES WITH TWO CHILDREN WHO LOOK EXACTLY LIKE BILLIONAIRE CEO.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Luca called immediately.

“Don’t open anything.”

“Too late.”

“They have the children’s faces.”

“I know.”

“I’m handling it.”

“No.”

“Nia—”

“You are not ‘handling’ my children like a corporate crisis.”

His voice tightened.

“Then tell me what you want.”

I stared at the article.

“My children protected.”

“Done.”

“And the truth told.”

A pause.

“That may destroy my mother.”

I looked at Theo and Lily in the back seat.

“That is not my problem.”

Luca was silent for several seconds.

Then he said, “Okay.”

Twenty minutes later, Moretti Global announced Luca would make a public statement.

And Celeste Moretti began calling every board member she still controlled.
